I was "318", when 318 wasn't cool......

-
I believe Christine had a 318...............

Nope. She was the one year only 350 cubic inch B motor called The Golden Commando.

I don't think there was a 350 poly. The 350 in 1957 was the first size of the big block and was one year only then went to 361 cubes! Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. By the way I was wrong once but I just can't remember when!

That is correct, except the 350 was one year only in 1958.

318Fest won't be a bracket race, But I will rank every car based on their ET and Dyno numbers and I'll add the info of what kind of cars they ran good against as well as build info. Remember this will be a TnT for all the other cars which run at the #MoparVsBrandXstreetcarShowdown so there will be fun races set up. My Duster is running finally and I aim to have the hottest 318 on the property.... now... who knows if that will actually happen.... Ill let you all know very soon! If you are near North Alabama.... come on out! Gates open at 10am Jakes Dragstrip Moulton, AL

i dont know who youve been talking to...but 318s still aint cool
Yes and no. I will 'kind of' agree with you if you are saying, compared to the 340, 383, 440, 413 max wedge, 426 wedge, or 426 hemi, is the 318 cool? then I would probably say no. Otherwise, I like the 318. Think about it. The 318 only has 9 cubes less than the famous 327, and that was / is a great performance platform. It's all about breathing. With some decent heads and headers, a 318 can rock your world.

If I figger out a way to bore and stroke a slant to 318, does that count?

One of the fastest street cars I ever had the pleasure of riding in had a 327 in it. Sublime colored '55 Chebbie named "Booger". I likes those 4"x 3.25" motors. Jeff, the owner of Booger decided he wanted to make a change and put a 502 in it. Jeff was disappointed in the change and considered putting that 327 back in where it came from .

318s are cheap, I even said people used to give them to me for free. Now there is a sect of know-it-alls out there that swear they can make a dime a dozen 318 do what a 340 does, what they don't say is they are using the 318 block, maybe even the crank and the rest is 340/360 parts...so that equals bullshit right? :) I mean no budget racing has been around forever, what they don't tell ya is its addictive and you eventually want to go faster and be competitive and well, that costs money

If it displaces 318 cubic inches, it's a 318.

If it doesn't, it isn't.

Pretty simple.

Which is the point ya cant take a 318 and mod the hell out of it and go around saying its a 318 right? When I think 318, I think stock heads pistons maybe a cam and intake for performance, no hogging out the ports, installing bigger valves none that Uncle Tony Bullshit... that's for people with more time than money nothing against Uncle Tony :)

I have to ask, and I'm keeping in mind (I hope you are too) that I posted this in the "joke" section as I really don't think I'm cool... BuT .......
Do you realize that changing cams, heads, intakes, and carbs don't change the cubic inch of the motor, correct ?? So if you put aluminum heads, dual quads, custom ground solid roller cam on a 318 it's ..... Still A 318 !!!!

That's what I've been sayin'.

You are talking displacement I am talking equipment and internals. Having a knowledge of what is in a 318 vs a 340 two very different animals. If you mod the hell out of a 318,and go around saying "its just a 318" is misleading the statement should be "Its a modified 318" but I get the whole racing scene and keeping secrets and whatnot to be competitive. It reminds me of a story an old head told me about how he beat the doors off a V8 57 Ford with a 56 Chevy wagon with a 6 cylinder three on the tree. Was the 6 stock? he wouldn't say...urban legend I'm thinking.

Honestly, I don't follow....
  • whose keeping secrets? Somebody on this site? or Uncle Tony? I don't know what your saying. I think they are all documented really well. So who has the secret ?? I need a name...
  • When my 318 Duster beats a 340 car, yes, they got beat by "just a 318". You know why? It has 8 pistons of 3.91 bore x 3.31 stroke = 318
  • Do you think ALL these 340's/360's on this site, or at the cruises are factory stock ?? Not if they are fast! Sorry, most recorded mid 14's from the factory, not fast.
  • Only thing I can make sense of all this is ..... YOU GOT BEAT BY A 318 AND YOU ARE STILL SORE..... searching for excuses :poke::D

I' m saying that in bracket racing most fellers don' t get into what' s really under the hood when they beat someone with a worked engine.
I got beat that time I stepped in the ring with Muhammad Ali..never by a 318..and Ali bought me a beer afterward...

Were bracket racing now ?? LOL..... Bracket racers only care about reaction time and a car that turns the same number every time. They don't care one tid-bit about anything else, be it a 318 or 440 or slant six. Help! When does this merry-go-round stop !!! LOL

Ya know I was just thinking, if 318s are so competitive why are they having an exclusive "318" fest at that Alabama dragstrip, wouldn't ya be standing there with your feathers out, taking on all comers? Mystery debunked LOL! yall are nuts. im just poking fun at ya... Its the same as having a "1976 Corvette fest" all 150 horsepower cars racing all day.

"Just a 318" and "only a 318" are two of the most common phrases I've heard in the past 38 years, when discussing what engine came in the majority of my cars from the factory.

I've heard that so many times, I've been tempted to get stickers made for my hood/fender.

...and just one more time for my own sanity-

If it displaces three hundred and eighteen cubic inches, it IS a 318.

No matter anything else.

If it does not, it IS NOT.
