Car acts dead after it gets hot...

-
The car acts like it is dead and won't crank but all my lights still work and I can start it by putting the key to the on position and bumping the starter relay
Define "bumping" the starter relay

Define "bumping" the starter relay

Usually I use a BFH and give it a couple of wacks (bumps) right here.... but some people like to use a large screwdriver like this...

Just kidding... I only use the bfh... I mean screwdriver method lol. :p

So you are bypassing the relay by jumping between the two lugs.

Next time try to activate the relay by hooking up a remote start switch to (I don't have a wiring diagram handy) the yellow wire ( please someone double check me here) and positive battery

If it starts the relay is fine, issue is elsware, if it doesn't, ground the wire that would go to the NNS and try again.

If it starts, issue in NSS cir, if it doesn't points to relay.

That's how I would track down the root cause.

I see you don't have a battery hold down. You can (and should get one) get an inexpensive one at an auto parts store. If you ever hit the brakes hard or someone hits you, the battery will fly around. Not good.

Isn't the screwdriver a remote starter switch? It connects the same two contacts.

No I don't. I keep meaning to get one. I have a couolebor tow straps in the garage, maybe ikk throw the camo one on the battery. :)

Most old Mopars I purchased over the years that did run had very similar problems. after INSTALLING a ground from engine to the body took care of the problem. Ground straps get left off or not a clean connection on fresh painted engine or firewall.

Just go aheah and get the mopar mini starter, you will be glad you did. Spins it over faster, does not rob excessive voltage from your ignition system like your stock mopar starter does.

Will start like it has fuel injection, quick starts.

It depends on how it is used. I'm trying to determine if the problem is the relay itself, the voltage that is supposed to go to the relay, or the NSS side of things

Sounds like it just needs replacement then, that '95 Durango starter is 25 years old. Time to swap it out.

Touche'

I think its actually less than a year old. Replaced it when I did my headers then got a warranty replacement last year.

Have you tried wiggling the gear shifter when turning the key, or shifting into neutral while turning the key? Doesn't cost you anything, maybe the shifter is out of adjustment.

If it acts dead when it's hot, you should name it Opossum....

Yes I've tried that. I installed the shifter myself and it's 100% aligned on a curve grading system. Meaning 75% straight in alignment got me an A+ grade lol.

I also used the new common core math system to do my measurements. So.... it must be right.

Not to derail this thread...but...how is your head porting going?? Haven’t seen an update lately.

Just curious.

2+3= 7. I'm sure that there was a bend in there at the vertical.

I havent touched the heads in a while. Its been a crazy last semester of school. Between graduation requirements, licensing exams and now packing the house to move across the country.

Replaced my starter relay... the car started up the best it ever has, only like 1 crank of the starter. the car still has the same problem though. Starts right up, but doesn't want to start again with the key after it warms up. It will start by bumping the relay though

mine lasted 3 drives, heat related, got a powermaster for it , still waiting on new headers-

Dental Dart(all),

Not trying to hi-jack this discussion(lots of good troubleshooting info here), but I think I know EXACTLY what your problem is because I struggled with the EXACT same situation on my 360 duster for about a year before figuring it out. It is your neutral safety switch on the transmission.
For over a year+, I couldn't shut off the car when stopping for gas. If I shut it down, I'd have to sit there for 15 minutes for everything to "cool down" and then car would crank slowly. if I waited another 5-10 minutes, the car started normally. (trying to jump made no difference at all). I am not an expert on how the Safety switch operators on a 727 trans., but mine started to "behave" in this manner after I had my transmission rebuilt. (I expect it is pressure sensitive?)
To by-pass the neutral safety switch out of the starting circuit, you need to run a small jumper wire from the correct lug(I can send a pic tomorrow if you are still working on this) on the starter relay to ground. I haven't replaced the safety switch yet(on my to-do list), but my car starts just fine cold or hot or anywhere in between. Of course, it will also start when still in gear which could cause a problem, but since no-one else drives my car.....
Let me know if this helps.
