Slant six in a Miata ? Why ???

-
I pulled a 318 out of a Datsun z car once, the guy had just bought the car was all done but the wiring but "it wasn't a Chevy engine" so my buddy "couldn't "use it.

Actually, the most popular swap in the Miata is the small block Ford. They fit really well and there are several companies that make kits. I've seen one. It was anything but boring and slow. lol
Well considering that ford owned Mazda for a while that don't surprise me....
Just because I'm so tired of the old "stick a Chevy motor in anything" if I wasn't gonna run a Mopar, I'd run a small block Ford too.

I have heard of a 440 in a minivan mounted behind the driver before.....
If it was me I'd put a small block in it where the engine is supposed to go, and daily drive it

Tony may have mentioned the "why" of this project some time back. If so, I missed it.
I could just shrug my shoulders and walk on by if he said something like..."I'm as broke as a homeless dude and I just want to see if I can do this."
Maybe what bugs me is that I have never looked at the Slanty mills as performance engines. I think that they are fantastic as workhorse engines. They are very durable and reliable.
My view is that a change should be an upgrade with the best parts that you can get within your budget or availability. The poor bastards in Cuba wouldn't be recycling Soviet era Lada parts to keep their '58 Buicks running IF they had access to modern stuff.
I will also admit that while I don't mind some non Mopar stuff in my own cars, the engine has to be a Mopar mill. I see a Chevy engine in a Mopar and it annoys me. Why? not necessarily based on purity but because our engines are not inferior to the point that others are a step up. There is a guy on FBBO with a 69 Charger with a BS-LS engine in it. That is a sacrilege!

I agree. There is a cost savings when purchasing parts for these engines. That’s it! And not much ether! There not overly superior that it is a no brainer move to do. IMO, it’s just stupid. I’m also with you that if your doing the swap, it should be a good upgrade in power. This 170-/6 is not. Swapping in an LA or other American V8 would have been very cool.

Fans of Tony DeFeo and his YouTube channel "Uncle Tony's Garage" may already know of this build.....

I wonder though....Why put a slant six in one of those cars? Why not a V6 like a 3.6 Pentastar or an LA series engine?
Slant six...It weighs almost double what a Miata engine weighs and makes about the same power.
Tony had to hack the firewall, the trans tunnel and then butcher some bullshit cover to close off the engine bay and trans tunnel.....to fit a slant six in there.
Opinions?

Better than a LS...

Because they can? That's hot rodding!
My question isn't "why he's doing it". My question is "Does he need anyone's permission to do it ?

Did he say the slant was being installed for performance?? I didn't hear that.

I like this idea too. Swap a V8 into anything!
Oh. You mean, like mine?

Does anyone have a spare Mini Cooper for a LA swap?

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Not at 1st but down the road he wants to do the engine up, wants see what he can get out of a high ish revving 170 /6.
If I was to do a /6 would be 170 got the best bore to stroke ratio.

I've had a cop tell me this "son, you're driving a bright orange duster, if you act out we will know"
Mine was a Panther-Pink 70 Swinger340. lol.
The cops would pull me over and tell me all the things they could charge me with, even tho I hadn't done any of those things in the past 24 hours, lol.
My Mum even got calls from the cops saying my car had been spotted doing such and such, where the heck could the find me...... while, in fact, I had been outta town for at least 10 days; what a riot.
I often played the "Sir,yes sir" routine and in the 5 years I drove that car, only got two tickets; one for speeding, and the other, for imprudent driving. I couldn't bs my way outta that imprudent, cuz he was right behind me when the alleged event occurred. lol. As for the speeding, Why the heck was he doing 55 in a 65? Oh I know, baiting that Pink Flamingo car I was driving... I guess you know that if you downshift and floor a 340Dart at 55, it will be doing 85 when you pass the driver's door of the car you are overtaking? I didn't,lol.
Yeah buying a car that color was a mistake. I bought it after dark, and it was parked under a mercury-vapor street light, which made it look Purple. Next day when I brought the rest of the money, with the sun blazing down on it, it was no longer Purple. I was 17, so that was a minor glitch....
but Boy if I only had that car today....

yeah, i may have had a hard time denying that "alleged incident"

(here is how it happened as i posted it a while ago)

i caught a pretty cool cop the other day ...about 11 at night, quiet street cutting through an industrial turf on my way home
2 lanes, 1 light
im in the fast lane, some import is in the slow lane

when the light turns green i start to go, not racing mind you, just pulling out
well, you know this thing people sometimes do, where they pace you, and your not really racing but your not letting the other car pass?

well, he did that to me
so at about 45 MPH i had enough of it, and i stepped on it
1.5 seconds later, at 75 MPH i let off, and the moment i let off, the cop behind me lit me up

so i pulled over, killed the engine, turned the dome light on and put my hands on the wheel
he came over and asked if i had a drivers license
i said, i do, but im not gonna reach for it with that 9MM laying there (i keep it under the armrest)

when he asked if it was loaded i managed to refrain from explaining they would be rather pointless if not loaded, and simply said "off course"

he ran my license and CPL and throughout the whole deal i of course was very polite (as always) and the cop must have appreciated that because he let me off with a warning
now, if you ever been let off with a warning before, you know it ALWAYS comes with a sermon (or so im told, i never get pulled over)

so, the sermon went something like this:

Son, what you are not getting a ticket for is reckless driving
if you get on it hard enough to go sideways...and i was behind you, you were s-i-d-e-w-a-y-s...that is considered reckless driving
and then he tells me, your driving an orange duster, if you acting out you WILL get noticed

I agree, but it’s obvious:
It’s what he has, and he is on a budget. I love him!

It does make uncle Tony more enjoyable that he is a cuteee.

He's adorable with that beard and the little round beer gut. Has very manly styling, that's hard to beat.

What ever floats your boat.....

Giant ballast tanks!
The size of houses!!,
proper maintenance,
Nuclear power,

{ 24, 7foot wide, 44’+ tall, half a globe range, smooth bore tubes loaded with Globe-changing Megatons of death,
and good seamanship while taking 15 degree rolls at 400 foot of depth under a class 5 Hurricane

getting the new guys to:

search for 7 feet of Fallopian tubes,
asking for pink tacos from the cooks,
asking the biggest Machinist for a Machinist-punch,

finger painting your superior’s boots red, yellow, and blue,

Stapling his coverall feet holes shut before drills,

standing at 40 degree angles,

getting flashed by the passing foreign vessels’s lady sailors as we drive by,

running with basically scuba tanks to find fires in the dark,

and telling the engineering Master Chief, “Nofucking balls!” When he threatens to kick your *** while you are cleaning his lake of oil leaks ina Forrest of piping that would make him completely vulnerable trying to get to you.

Ahh good times!
Those were a few of my favorite things (that floated our ‘boat!’)

I figured I'd resurrect this " lets beat up on Uncle Tony" Thread(or one off em ) LOL!

Tony did fire the engine on the ground but i cant help but think there will be an epic fail that halts the project in its tracks...I see alot of smoke on he horizon...not welder smoke either...blown trans line or oil burning out the exhaust smoke ... reasoion I say that? he picked up a scrapyard motor, didnt even open it up,ius throwing it in to see what happens. A set of bearings rings and gaskets is in order at a minimum. hings i think he did good on his home paint jobs on the swinger and Duster.

I seem to remember seeing a picture of a Dutch Navy Fregat giving the Salut you mentioned
I believe it was a sign of the times that the ladies got in trouble for it...or perhaps it had something to do with the picture surfacing (little nautical pun for ya)
