383 big block builds, from mild to wild, I want to hear about them!!

-
I built one that got my scamp to 11.80. Used KB domed pistons, a .600 lift solid cam, milled and ported 452 heads, fender well headers, and a single 850 Holley on a tunnel ram. Stock crank and rods.

4.10 gear 8 3/4 with a spool and pinion snubber. 9 inch wide slicks.

learned a lesson with this one. Never ever hone the rods to float the piston pins, this was my first “race” build and I got some bad advice.

.030 383 block, stock rods w/ARP bolts, cast crank from a 400(remained ext balance), TRW 2315’s, block decked for pistons to sit +.020.
Valve pockets added to pistons.
Nicely reconditioned 906’s, with dual springs, milled to 79cc, not ported, .020 steel shim head gaskets.
RPM intake, 850 carb, 256/262-106 solid cam, Isky iron rockers, 1-7/8” headers.

Made 485hp, went a best of 11.18@3550lbs.
4.56’s, 5400 stall, 9x30 radial slicks

Hell yeah! Them gears are puttin that short stroke to use!

One of the pistons came apart at the track, wiped out the engine. All the wrist pins were purple and welded to the rods. I made sure there was ample clearance on assembly and even had an oil hole drilled on the end of the rod.
So what problem did the honed rods cause?

Is the Holley on the Formula S the original carb? So it’s a California car?

Some talk about piston pins. Here is how ma mopar did the heavy duty 360 pistons on the D series trucks. Pressed on rods, better piston to pin oiling.

Nick's Garage drills 1/4" holes here on his engine builds too, for better oiling.

There is an engine masters episode where a 383 mopar vs 383 chitvy stroker it was a solid combo
I liked the combo. A nice street engine build. Incoming torque was amazing.
It surprises me that enterprising engine builders didn't take advantage of the 383's strengths. Skirted block, almost indestructible; shorter stroke than a 350 Chebby for high rpm operation; shaft rockers as std.
Most guys went right to the 440. The 383 was given a “Ehhhh” or a roll of the eyes. Followed by, “Why didn’t you do the 440?” Or some other comment in a disparaging manor.

383 was the go to or word on the street back in the day, 318s were throwaways...yanked to be replaced by the bigger engine. It still isnt right to this day why someone would dump money into a 318...

You still can't let go of that? Still not much difference between 318 and a 340 done right. See post #5. Why bring that up in a 383 thread?

Why? Bigger is better? Then your a hypocrite if you don’t dump tons of cash into a Hemi mountain motor.

What? You don’t have that kind of money?
Then perhaps you should not be in the car hobby?
After all, chastising others for building what they got, perhaps not having money for that $700 or better for a 340 block that needs a lot of attention just to make right for a build could be a deal breaker for others here.

On the flip side, there are those that like a challenge of a smaller displacement engine. Trying to do more with less and using there head instead of there wallet.

Oh wait! Never mind….. I forgot you’re independently very wealthy. Once again, money corrupts the thinking allowing you to shame others for there lack. Please don’t mind us poor lowly turds here on the basement floor polluting your air so high and mightly above as you sit on your kingly high morels and piles of cash while we strive to scratch out some run with what he have.

Sorry bud, (not really) but I’ve scratched an itch remembering the old tough days when obtaining performance parts for what ever I had under the hood (almost always a 318) was a huge struggle in search of creating a bit of fun for myself.

At least I was able to whip some GM & Ford *** with that low compression 318.

Seriously! How dare you?! Seriously! Is it that bad you have to crap on anybody without money or just the wish to use a 318?
I wonder if your even intelligent enough to make one quick much less actually fast.

People like you make the hobby a **** place for those with a lack of money or means or the wish to challenge themselves with a smaller engine.

Why don’t you bugger off and join a camp of elitist elsewhere.

If you’re not going to help, then you must actually be against MoPar guys.

Un- FreAkin-BElievable

So much for my car my way!
