Don't take it off. Just slightly loosen the bolts so it can slide front to back NOT side to side.

It is already off. The slide doesn't fit over the screw pin coming out of the steering sector. It couldn't move it back and forth. Must be the wrong part. When you tightened it down it just locked the screw down.
