Hello all. New FABO member here. I'll be puling a 360 engine and transmission from a 1975 Dart 4-door at a yard, and wanted advice on: should I take the differential and axles? The 360 will be for my '75 Dart SE, which has a 318 and 904 transmission. Here are pics of the differential at the yard. Is it "better" than what I have in my car now? (I have stock differential/axles in my car).

Yes that looks like the 8 1/4 axle. They are stronger than the 7 1/4 and are coming up in price as well. You will need that with a 360 engine.

Thank you! I am not keen on distinguishing parts (I read thru forums here to learn, but ... advice from veteran members is best.) Will there be a tag to confirm? The car appears to have been partially buried (even the engine has soil/dirt) so I'll be scraping and brushing stuff off ... just to know where to check for a tag/number/code.

First determine what rear end is in your car. Maybe you already have an 8 1/4 rear.

the one on the yard car is a 8 1/4” that’s valuable. But you shouldn’t of took the axles out of it. Just take it as a complete unit: drum to drum AND take the shock plates and u-bolts.

The differential was disassembled as shown in the pics (did someone need a specific part from it? or were they trying to confirm size?); so, it was already on the ground--another reason I ask if I should take it--it's removed already.

Could have been someone snatching one part. They put the removed parts real nice back in the cover. Usually someone that know what they are doing.

I’d assume you could buy any parts that are missing. Not a good idea to assume though.

if it’s a 3.21 gear ratio stamped on it.. take it.

If it’s 2.45 ratio don’t take it cause the case won’t accept larger gears.

mid it’s 2.9_3? It your call and you better have a factory manual if you plan to put it back together... or hope you can put a post here on FABO to help you.

Thank you! Will the gear #s show where the cover is off?
