how small a oil filter can you run on a 340 hp motor ? put a 340 in a 63 dart there is no room, ,have hp exhaust manifolds on car, have reg size short filter on now but need something smaller. picture and filter number ? a friend of mine used to run a real small blue filter ,cant remenber who made it or part number ? thanks

You can't rotate the adaptor to a different spot to give you more clearance?

I also run the Mopar 090 on all my small block mopars. Headers or not. Van. Car. Pickup. LOL

Smaller diameter, pretty short: fram ph3614, or wix 51348.
Standard diameter, shortest i know of: fram ph3512 or wix 51335.
I would definately choose the wix. (I have purolater numbers too, if you want.) Napa numbers are similar to wix, made by wix.
Drop off the front 5 from wix number for napa number.

I put a 340 in a 64 dart. I did it 45yrs ago, and still have it. I used the 90 degree adapter and run the full size filter (wix 51515), but I do have headers. It took a little doing to get the clocking right, but it's doable.

Oil filter technology has come a really long way. I still like running the biggest one I can find.....just old habits, but as long as you stick with a good quality brand, the small ones have an incredible amount of good filter media. Whatever you do, don't skimp.

I have on some old notes that the Wix 51068 is a shorter version of the 51515...it has been so long that I don't remember if that is true or not, but there you go.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ correct in so many ways. You should edit out the Fram numbers. :poke::poke::lol:

Same here I run the 090 on my daily driver truck my wife Durango and had it on the duster since day one and Lord knows the torture I put that through. I did buy a wicks filter because I couldn't get a 090 and ended up not using it because it was a little bigger and wouldn't fit and then when I got another 090 I compared the two and was much more impressed with the more significantly larger holes and more of them on the 090. Seems like more flow..

Ma Mopar uses them from the factory and has to back the extended 100K mile warranty..... works for me.

you could also install a remote oil filter
adds what, a quart of oil, cools better, easier to change, larger filter (again, more oil) and...less messy to change

on the other hand, costs money, and you are running oil lines, which could fail

who is it that has that green car with the real cool remote oil filter setup...ah, yes @Dusterdenovo

oh course, it is up to you if you trust fram or not

I'll add this too......It might be Bob the filter guy I cannot remember, bot ONE OF THEM cuts a LOT of different brands apart to show how much filter media is in each different brand. Part number after part number the MotorCraft filters have the most filter media of any other brand. Maybe not 100% scientific, but certainly interesting. That's all I run anyway....not because of that, but it's just been my personal preference for a long time. I run the 2 quart size FL299 on the 351M in my truck and on my slant six in Vixen.

You wonder at what point does all that media get in the way? At what point would you rather a little bit of dirty oil getting through as opposed to no oil?..
Food for thought...

It's crossed my mind. Then I think of how crappy K&N filters are and I stop worrying about it. LOL

I like remote filter adapters. Always have, but I won't run them. WITHOUT FAIL they always start leaking somewhere at some point.

I tried a remote oil filter once, back in 2002 on a new motor. At exactly 13 minutes into the cam break in there was a HUGE fireball under my hood, I dove head first into my car to turn off the key while my friend grabbed the hose and started spraying water (not knowing it was an oil fire....ooops).....Anyway, long story short, one of the oil lines that cam with the kit (not steel braid) failed. It looked like radiant heat from the headers may have caused the failure, as the hole in the line was at the closest point to the headers (about 6 inches away)....that hole sprayed hot oil onto the headers creating a big ole fire ball.....Once everything cooled, and I found the issue, I proceeded to remove that oil filter relocation kit with extreme prejudice....kicked it around on the ground....threw it down the street....Never again for me, I put my old 90° adapter back on and that is what I have used ever since.

Oil Filters
WIX Baldwin Length
51515 B2 5.197"
51068 B233 4.338
51085 B34 3.836
51348 B7491 3.404
51335 B7221 2.483

If you check the pressure drop across the smaller filter after a thousand miles (maybe sooner) you’d do what you can to fit the biggest filter you can. Small filters are more restrictive.
