I was "318", when 318 wasn't cool......

I have two 318 powered vehicles and two "ran when pulled" complete engines, one a no serial number warranty block and the other a 9.2:1 roller.

If they could bore a 318 to 340 (4.040) they would . Then there will be a feller chiming in that displacement isn't where ya make power LOL!
That feller would be wrong because there is no replacement for displacement. No matter which way you look at it.

Another example:

390 stroker from a 318 block- NOT a 318.

318 with W2 heads and blower/supercharger- STILL a 318.

How about a 318 @ .090 over?

Does it still get the nod even though the CID is up a bit?

318 +.030, 14:1, W2, Enderle injection on Methanol. 5500 stall Glide with trans brake, 9" with 4.88's. 2750# with driver. Ran 9.95 @ 135

IMO if it's over bored it should be noted.

It DOES change the displacement.

Most people are too lazy to do the math.

I have heard a few folks say things like "now it's 322".

I guess we can say the jury is out on if a .010 or .030 over is still a 318.

Again, I suggest an asterisk.

...but a 390 is most clearly NOT a 318, despite what the block casting says.

Isn't. 030 over =6 cubic inches? Who has the recipe for the stroker version on these engines?

It's 390.

or 392 at .040 over IIRC.

It really doesn’t matter what you start out with. If you’re in for using that block the go for it. Have fun. There is only so much power you can get from a gallon of gasoline no matter what. The trick and the fun comes from getting the most from what you have. That’s why we’re gear heads

Rumblfish! 318 is 5.2 litres not 4.9.
What the heck did my fat fingers type?!?!?!?!
I have no freaking idea.
Rumblfish a .030 over 318 at 323 is 5.295 litres so call it a 5.3litre
That’ll work! Now where’s that GM???

Thank you James!!!
Rumble is American, and here, a 318 is a 318
a .030 over is a 323 (but still a 318)
Now now, don’t be schooling the Aussie.
He called me out on a mistake and rightfully so.
I stand corrected!
(Besides! If political shenanigans keep up, we’ll be over there in there back yards for R&R before heading north to duke it out some. He might forget to tell you what bugs can kill you over there.... psssst, all of them!)

Otherwise!
Ahhhhhhh, a lot of truth there. The engine gets called by its born displacement virtually no matter what you bore it out to. Unlike them Ford guys that dice up every last fraction of an inch and tell you. (WTF is that all about?)

To push the CID of the 318 ... again...
@.060 over, 327.79 / 5.4 Ltr
@ a 4.00 bore, 332.76 / 5.5 Ltr.

Hummmmm, time to sonic check for those magic thick walled 318’s. Heensely (sp?) is finding these and throwing in 4.0 arm cranks. Though I’d no longer call that a 318.

I dunno . I like teeners. Got a 74 318, and picked up a "free" 77 318 short block. Will be doing a "free eighteen" buildup when my block and rotating assembly is out of machine shop jail.

If you find a 68-70 teener, a lot of times the castings have thick enough walls that you can bore it out for standard bore 340 pistons. Being that a 318 and 340 have the same stroke crank etc, you can build a really nice one.

Ya,ya,ya no replacement for displacement. I get that. But the reality is as light as these cars are, for all around street use, and weekend funning around, how much HP do you realistically need? I'd say a decently geared car, with 325hp teener would be a lot of fun, not too expensive to build, and still be driveable.

What I mean by driveable is it doesnt idle like a coffee can full of rocks. You dont have to beat it with a whip to get it out of the garage. We all like power, but at what point does it become something that you wouldent want to live with every day.

I hear of guys with nicely tuned and running fairly quick teeners and stocker slants that pull em and build 450-500hp strokers for them, then they dont enjoy the car as much anymore. Dont drive it as much anymore.

Everything is a trade off.

That all being said I also have a 408 short block and fully machined and balanced rotating assy I need to get off my *** and assemble. One of these days I will. It's that pesky thing known as working for a living that gets in the way. Hoping by the time I retire I wont be too tired to do all this stuff.

Regardless of whether you have a 2.2 4 banger with a turbo, a supercharged slant 6 , hopped up 318, or more just remember this.
