Howdy guys. Anyone restored a roof rack? They can be a pain to disassemble after 50+ years. The mounting parts can be rechromed. The roof rails are stainless steel, so dings can be taken out and they can be buffed. But what about the rails on top?
The side and F/R top rails are chrome plated steel. I’ve thinking about looking for some stainless steel tubing in the sane outside diameter as the originals. Might he cheaper than rechroming the originals

I would think the straight (ish) tubes wouldn't be bad to refab. But the curved front and rear ones.......

57 years after production.....the wagon now has reverse lights.....now maybe people will not grumble at me for my "broken" old car.

jedindl, do the rack supports at corners just screw into the roof sheet metal? Or is there any special reinforcement in the car ?
Also, what steps were taken in factory to keep water from leaking in?
Does anyone in SK eat haskaps? They make a refreshing summer drink if diluted and saturated with sugar, but beyond that, they are just too tart.

I’m not jedindl but will offer to answer the question. The rack I pulled from a 65 wagon had these threaded inserts (very similar to nutserts) in the roof for the four corners (2 per corner) and one each side for the crossbars. I didn’t notice any sealer in or around the inserts. Maybe they were sealed with the rubber seals (which were totally dried up on the wagon from which I pulled the rack. FWIW those seals are available as a repro).
Thank you. Doesn't sound like Dodge was not too concerned about a mattress catching wind at 70 mph and yanking the rack, and damaging the roof. I guess I'll not worry too much about it.

I have a question about a 62 Lancer Wagon I need help with. Are heater cores available ? I have a friend buying a 62 and it needs one so he asked for my help.Can't seem to fine any information on them at all.

There is no special reinforcement. I am sure that today there would be, but remember, seat belts and back up lights were options back then.
They are attached to the roof via 2 fine thread bolt each. Each screw is anchored with a rubberized nut. A nut in a rubber sleeve essentially. When the bolt tightens the rubber expands and grips the roof. The rubber seals the roof well.
<edit> I installed myself, and I know I didn't have trouble finding the hardware at a hardware store somewhere, when I was living in NorCal. <edit>
My liner happens to be out so...here is a picture from the bottom side and one of a spare screw.
I never heard of haskaps. Had to look it up. We eat lot's of Saskatoon berries though!

Everything I see is for 63 and up .I haven't seen anything for 1 st gen A bodies anywhere.

Hrm, could be, them Road Toad's are a breed to their own.......I would find a parts manual and get a part number or go direct and check with a manufacturer's website.
Alternately, get the one you have fixed at a shop and then install a reducer/splicer in the line to lessen the pressure in the heater core.
(I am currently installing these in mine since they are summer beasts and need for cabin heat is low).

Ah, finally. Thanks jedndl. Rubberized nuts, and a slathering of RTV should from top and bottom should
do the trick.
Saskatoons are basically same as haskaps. We researched them here in KY but they were too acidic, hard to pick, and they bloom too early here.

I didn't use anything but the rubberized nuts and they have been fine. As long as you make your holes just the right size.
Oh no. I beg to differ. Sakatoons are not like haskaps! Sakatoons are of the blueberry family, but they are native to this region.
I wouldn't think that KY is the right locale for Saskatoons. But we digress!

That's exactly what my Mom owned. I beat the dog piss out of it when I took it around the block. It's a 4 door hardtop wagon.
I did a search years ago and if you could find one in decent shape, then you'd have to sell your first born and kick in another grand.
