I have a set of original A body SBP axles (top) and a set of LBP axles that are the correct overall length to fit in an A body axle (bottom). The angle from the picture throws it off, but the brake mounting surfaces on the right are fully lined up to show the difference in the flanges on the left, the distance from the bearing retainer flange to the drum brake mounting surface is different on both. I fully expected this and it doesn't surprise me. The difference in distance isn't a lot, 1 15/16" for the SBP and 2 1/8" for the LBP for a difference of 3/16" or 0.1875" total. While I know I COULD make these LBP axles work with redrilled SBP drums and hardware... I know that I SHOULDN'T. And even if I did, I would likely end up upgrading it all in the future anyway so might as well do it correctly now.
My question is, now I am not sure which brakes I should be looking for, rear brakes from a B or E or C body. There is a local deal where someone has some C body brakes that I was considering but I don't know the difference in measurements and if they will work. Is there a chart that shows the measurements that I listed above so that I can determine if I have axles that will work with either B body or C body brakes.

P.S. I am fine with drums in the rear as a cost saving measure, but if you have any cheap junkyard disk brake options I will be fully open to that as well.
 
Most all BBP A body replacement axles have the offset to use B/E/C body backing plates and drums. SBP A body drums can't be redrilled for these axles because of this difference in the flange offset, plus the center register is significantly larger on the BBP axles. Any 10-11" B/E/C (4 1/2" BC) drums will work.
For cheap rear discs look into Jeep Grand Cherokee (early 4 1/2" BC) or Liberty rear discs, basically bolt ons with a few minor mods. Lots of threads on here about those.
 
Measure because some B-body brakes can be 11" and maybe C-body. Not sure about E-body.
 
B & E had both 10” and 11”, but they Both fit with the same axles and read end housing.
 
Yeah I had heard that B & E bodies can share the same brakes, but I don't usually hear anything about C body brakes so I can only assume that they are different. I did not know that some C bodies were 5x5" bp, I had just assumed they all shared the same mopar 5x4.5 but had different diameter/thickness to accommodate for more weight
 
I had a similar question bouncing around my head. I have a 69' Cuda 8 3/4. I may upgrade the axles with ones from "John" at "Mopar Maddness" on "Ebay". They would be 5x4.5 to match the 73'-76' discs up front. I can get a cheap 8 1/4 out of a 72' Polara. Could I swap the Polara rear drums and backing plates over to the Cuda rear axle with the aftermarket axles. Or is this a question for John? If this worked, I could also get the rims and other hardware cheap. One stop shopping.

can't say enough about Dr.Diff He really knows whats up and has the answers and options to make something work.
 
Any BBP brakes have the same brake stand off dimensions B,C,E body. I have 11x2 1/2” C body backing plates on my 68 Barracuda.
