Ran across a youtube vid ....evidently some oil change outfits are sucking oil out of engines through the dipstick rather than the drain plug. I don't know 'bout YOU but this does not seem very good to me

1...Won't sludge tend to remain in the pan, and maybe be large/ heavy enough to avoid the pickup tube?
2....I realize oil change places "ain't interested" but how do you notice any filings/ engine damage by this method

I realize this has tremendous advantages. You don't have to spend a lot of time removing that filthy belly pan, or getting your nose dirty. Why, you might not even have to get under there !!!

In a perfect world you should drain hot oil and let it go until it stops dripping. Gimpy Lube doesn't want to take the time to do it right. LOL I evac the oil in my push mower but you don't get it all out. Way easier than turning it over to drain it or messing with the drain plug though. .

If you had ever had them crossthread your oil filter, you would be avoiding these outfits like the plague, and we wouldn't be having this conversation... You get what you pay for, and is this case it is minimum wage employees working as fast as possible with minimal training.

i bought an oil evac pump for my boat
no way im getting a catch can under there

Took my 4x in to get the front diff checked before the snow because i was being lazy. Bossman had to go down to get the plug threaded on right after the grease monkey cross threaded it. I still havent checked the damage......My bad on two fronts.

My previous and gladly missed money pit had a drain hose connection on the the pan. You simply pushed the hose end out the lower bilge plug on the back and drained in that manner after removing the cap. 23' Sea Ray 265hp/350 Merc. It had a threaded dip stick for evac but also had the other. Never tried doing an evac.

Can't be too hard to rig something like that up

Not sure if it came that way or not. There was a clip through the end cap that you would just connect in the bilge somewhere near the left side manifold for normal use. It was very handy! That was never an issue for me, the rest the boat was. They "Boats" are great when used regularly!

I gotta say....taking your car to an oil change place and expecting quality work is like wearing a white robe and pointy hood to a BLM meeting. You're kinda asking for a beating....

little bit of googling shows it was an option at some point, and was made standard later on

i think i like the idea...but since i just bought the evac pump, im gonna run with it

The full mark on this stick is just a wee bit lower than the tube mounting area........small block Mopar component. Ya, that’s gotta work great.

For the love of God man having someone else change your oil not on my Dart not now not ever! I sent my wife's car in once about 6 or 7 years ago for oil change about a day later it popped a code light under further inspection I found that the charcoal filter for the gas tank hose had been pulled off even though it was a bonded hose. they just figured some girl would bring their car back to get fixed when the code popped up. Straight up shysters.

That was likely mandated by corporate after all those "left the drain plug out" stories we've all heard.

Can't leave it out if they never take it out.

When you use an evac to suck the oil from the pan you slide a thin plastic tube down the dipstick tube until it touches the bottom of the pan, the oil is then removed thru the plastic tube. It actually works pretty good, worst case it may leave a couple ounces in the bottom of the pan. This practice has been around for decades in the marine, lawn and garden and industrial engine industries.

I never take any of my vehicles in for oil changes or any repairs that I can do myself. Seen way too many people who have been severely screwed by unskilled careless idiots. Recently met an older woman who had the drain plug on her car stripped by one of the local quick oil change joints. Her car was extremely well maintained and low mileage, but she was willing to buy another one instead of getting it fixed. I tried to convince her that she would be better off spending the money to replace the oil pan since the car was otherwise in great condition. Hopefully she did, but haven't seen her since.

To be clear guys, I normally DO change my own oil---a real PITA on a Cummins because of the shear amount--but I was ASTOUNDED to find (a video) that depicted this as 'normal operation'

............

Probably wouldn't be able to fill the oil either!

Then too, when the local CDJ dealer leaves your daughter's oil filter loose and her '08 Sebring messes the driveway..............

If she went on her planned trip before stopping here no telling what damage may have occurred. As it was, I only noticed the oil in the drive after she left. Had to call her to come right back.
I tightened the filter and called the Chrysler dealer for her. They had the lift just waiting for the car and re-did the oil change.

As far as draining oil from my boat 4.3, here's how the sucks plumbing looks.........

Yikes.

My Dakota has an unfriendly bend in it, where you have to kind of force the dipstick, and if it's not oriented right, it won't go.

...but that looks ridiculous.

I have had about 12 new vehicles and quite a few of them came with a couple "free" oil changes and or inspections. I have seen it all. Came out to my brand new truck and found fresh oil on the center of the steering wheel !!! I had a grease monkey get in my brand new car right out of the oil pit grab the inside door handle covered with grease and then proceeded to grind his greasy boots into the grey carpeting (up and over the weather tech floor mat ,a real effort to do) I took a truck in for a "Free" inspection they decided to do a the Emissions inspection without asking, got real shitty when I declined to pay for it (I lived in an area that didn't require Emissions inspections) they were pissed they couldn't screw me. I no longer put up with the stupidity , I'll do it myself and know it's done right.

So far as i know, all four stroke jet skis evacuate through the dipstick.

I change my own oil on my cars, can't tell you many horror stories

yah, the 4X N-body Dak's are a PITA at oil change times. Not agonizing, but no picnic either.
