It’s hell to get old. Rocker clearance

I saved pictures of another one I saw for sale just in case I did buy it and had to take it apart to move it. I wasn’t sure it came apart. View attachment 1715741124View attachment 1715741125View attachment 1715741126View attachment 1715741128

Yeah, you can do a valve job with that but it’s sketchy at best. You can’t take much materiel off when cutting a seat. The table isn’t solid. And the head isn’t very secure. Things just move around way too much to be accurate unless you spend a huge amount of time screwing with it.

I know my buddy made a lot of money with it so it’s well used. He is supposed to have an auction this summer to sale off this, his mill, tumbler, (my buddy is buying his surfacer because it will do blocks and heads a lot faster than his mill), and whatever else is left in the shop. He’s around 70 now and the shop has been closed for years. He would just go there and tinker.

The mill and tumbler are very interesting. For a one man shop, the mill is much better than a seat and guide machine. With the right fixtures you can do seat and guide work, valve jobs, surfacing plus everything else a mill can do.

The mill will do the work of 3 machines. It may be slower than a S&G machine or dedicated surfacer, but a sitting machine doesn’t make money.

How big is the tumbler??? I can think of a million uses for a good sized one.

If I was 20 years younger the mill would have been here already. Like I’ve said before I’m to old to learn how to run one and my son and don’t ask me why, has no interest in doing head work. It’s a big sucker but I could easily sell my green duster to free up the space. I’m not sure in the size of the tumbler as I had zero interest in it. I think he still has one lathe there and possibly his engine washing machine.

Buying new equipment is you saying, “hey........ I need more **** to work on.
And I bigger variety of **** to work on”.

I’m on the other side of that.
I’m hoping to not have any more major equipment purchases.

rockers are nothing but if you would see the clearancing I’ve had to do for the pushrods because I moved them over you would shake your head. The 1.6 rockers aren’t helping any. I got another shortblock sitting hear that I should just put a set of speedmaster heads on. With 5 years on my 422 I won’t race it again. Those R3 blocks are to hard to find.

I run 1.6's on my Edlebrocks and 1.7's on the Indy heads. Not near as much material removed as you had to, but still a lot of grinding and testing. If it was easy women and small children would be doing it. LOL

Ohhh well I did four rockers and figured I’d give it a try. Pushrods must still be hitting the damn heads. Time for a few days off and possibly stripping these heads down and using my other set of stock location pushrod heads.

well I took my little break and watched some great golf and some drag racing and collected my thoughts. I already had bluing on the pushrods so I touched it up and blued the spring pocket area on the rockers. I put two rockers on the shaft and bolder it down and it was the spring pocket area that needed more grinding. I found two then checked two, ground two checked two. Very slow process taping them up, cleaning them, putting them on the shaft and bolting them down. Then taking it back off and starting over with two more. Well I just finished it up at 6pm and everything is good to go. Damn this sucked bigtime. I should be pulling my other engine and bolting this one in this weekend

Ohhh on top of this right before I jumped in for a shower Sunday morning before church a good buddy texted me that a longtime friend of ours (30 years) passed away. He was a carpenter and I was a millwright in the same area in the steel mill and I also raced with him. Yesterday another longtime friend that was in the hospital fighting coronavirus passed away. We raced together 45 years. That double whammy takes the wind out of your sails.

I recently lost 2 friends of 30+ years, too. This disease is real. I'm tired of hearing all the conspiracy theories. However it was introduced to the world, it's REAL. Get vaccinated, folks. I don't want to go to another funeral of someone I've known for 35+ years. JMO.

The wife and I both had the virus at the same time , (been over it about 3 months) , she was tested yesterday for antibodies, hers are higher than some one thats had both shots .
Hoping mine are the same ----------

why do the guys that got vaccinated feel the need to tell everyone to get vaccinated. It’s not for everyone.

Sorry to hear about your Buddy's, that's a real kick in the teeth. RIP
You do get an "Atta Boy" for the rocker arm work.
Cant wait to see the results.

I guess I'm just a bear for wear. I turn 69 tomorrow and just bought a used Bridgeport Series 1 mill. The way I look at it, if I get another good year with it, it will have been worth it.

John, sorry to hear about your friends.

Looks like you knuckled down and got the rockers done.
I’ll be looking forward to hearing how that combo works out for you.

I wonder if there were people like you around when people were getting the Polio or Smallpox vaccines? Probably not, because those diseases are essentially gone. Covid-19 will be here forever killing people because some asshats prefer to believe POS DJT.

Thanks for stepping all over my racing tech post with your beliefs. Start your own damn post. Azz-hat.

Why won’t these jerks post in the general section instead of ruining tech posts. It has nothing to do with racing or engine building.

Hey John, did you consider trying a set of offset-cup lifters to help alleviate some of the interference caused by the angles? Just curious on your thoughts.

It may have helped but I’ve had this set of Bam lifter on my shelf for around five years. I also have three sets to send out for rebuild so I wasn’t willing to buy another set.
