After months of research, machine shop work and parts coming in the 71 valiant is in the final stages of being put back together and running driving vehicle again. If you remember we had an issue of massive endplay from a wiped out thrust bearing. Had to do a full rebuild, put in a forged crank, forged scat rods, .040 over Keith black pistons, the edelbrock aluminum upper end kit(heads, intake, cam, lifters, carb) . We were looking to retain the 904 transmission, but as we had a good small block 727 sitting on the shelf we had the local transmission shop give it their all out build, torque converter rebuilt to match. We got the transmission installed, firmfeel steering gearbox stage 2. Firmfeel is 45 minutes from us, so we went there in person. Putting the new tie rods and ball joints in (once we get the correct parts). Should be back together in the next couple weeks. Changing out the wiring harnesses in the engine bay, a few other items. The pic is

What cam did the Edelbrock kit come with? 65'

It came with their 7177 cam. As well as the lifters, timing set, heads, intake, etc. Also the day my son ordered it they were offering your choice of carb between the 600cfm or 750cfm. He got the 750cfm as he had bought a 600cfm the month before having to rebuild the engine.

I am currently using that same Edelbrock kit on my 273 Commando. I have it behind a 904 transmission w/3000 stall converter and 3:91 rear gear. To be honest that's alot of cam for my 273. I'm using an Edelbrock 650 cfm carb which is fine. I had the distributor re-curved by Halifaxhops and it made a big difference between 2-3 shift. It's a pretty strong runner but gives up low end torque due to the high cam duration. I have a Lunatti 703 LK camshaft I'm probably going to put in this winter. 65'

What is the displacement of your engine?

Yeah, its definitely alot of cam, and I know that while they say it works on all the small block engines its really more geared for the 340+. So hoping with the 318 punched. 040 over that it plays well with everything. Running 3.55 gear ratio currently and may step it up into a little steeper gearset to get it dialed in.

You won't have much vacuum at idle with that cam. I don't have power brakes so it not a problem for me. Getting it to idle down low can be tricky. The 3000 stall converter is almost a must while running this cam. 65'

I had the RPM cam in a 318 with RHS closed chamber heads, 3,000 stall converter. Damn thing ran really well.

If you can drive from where you live to Firm Feel in 45 minutes you are either doing it in the middle of the night or using a hover craft of some sort.

I can tell you within an 1/8th of a mile where you will hit traffic every time. I hate that drive.

Lol, definitely flying under the radar. Yeah I may have been optimistic on how quickly I can drive there. In good traffic the offpeak traffic it's a 45+ minute drive. I think the last time I made the drive there it took closer to an hour. The first time took a bit longer as their driveway is very obscure and easy to miss.

Running manual brakes, so vacuum not a big issue there. We had the convertor for our 727 rebuilt by performance torque converter. They are fairly local to us, probably an hour away. He said he took it out as far as he could with the stall, which I think he said was around 2600 rpm, I'll have to open the box and verify that.

I’m surprised they let you stop by. They’ve been telling us locals that you have to ship them the parts to be rebuild and they’ll ship them once done. Some load of **** about the county and traffic. And if you look, half of the stuff they sell is just rebranded, and for more than you can find from other sources. I’m one full a body kit and done with them....

They gave me the same comment about the country, the housing development growing up around them. I think the big difference is that we part out a ton of a body cars and always pull the steering gearbox out and pile them up to sell. I think we just timed it right as they needed cores to rebuild to sell and with no swap meets going on then they were running on short supply, we needed to have one of ours rebuilt and no one wanted to pay to ship half a dozen heavy units understandably. Otherwise I am sure we would have had to do the send it to them and get it shipped back.
