340 mismatched heads?

-
For a little perspective if concerned about performance...back in the 80's...

The pavement stock car racers in WI had come up with a lower cost 9-1 engine that lasted two seasons compared to the unlimited comp engines they had been running.

Tech crews used a whistler to check compression on one cylinder.

When the rule went into effect the tech guys found many engine bays had been modified so only one spark plug was accessible to check... Wires, oil lines, new tubing was cleverly placed in the way.

The engines were 12-1 except on that one hole which was 9-1. No difference in longevity... but you could hear which guys had the higher comp.

Who snitched? Bithlo drag strip outside Orlando, now Speed World. Still love the boat trailer races when I can get there from Washington state.

It looks like one of the heads has been ground on by someone, so I'll keep them, and give my set of J heads to "clemintine" for a budget build for a unicorn '89-92 roller cam LA motor he has. It's a budget motor, so I'm donating my doorstop J heads and a set of Ebay stainless valves with single keepers. He's a great guy in North Seattle(communist, I know), for his '34 Plymouth coupe. If anyone wants to help, he's a great guy. Sprays photons in the hospital. He has a 67 Barracuda 383 he building from scratch, and a 34 Plymouth we're helping him with. If anyone has advice or donations, much appreciated.

Heads were never a matched set. They came from a bin, and got put on the short block. At taht point maybe one could sya they were a "matched set" but only because they were on the same engine...lol.

Interesting discussion on the Mopar 340 heads. I finally started to give my Challenger A66 engine some love after sitting and not started for over 20 years. Both of my heads are 915 heads. Driver's side head; dated 12/03/69 and is an O head. The passenger side; dated 2/11/70 and is a U head. Engine is Windsor built 340 with a date of February 26, 1970.
I had hardened seats and bronze guides installed in 1980 when the car was my daily driver.
Actually thinking of going with Edelbrock aluminum heads?
