Hey guys,

I killed my HF vise and went and got a YOST Apprentice 465 Vise. I read all I could of reviews and stuff and still unsure if I bought a decent vise for the garage and my purpose. Its a garage benchtop vice that's gonna see the typical abuse you see when working on old car parts and such. Anyone have their 2 cents worth?

I have a 50 year old Yost vice that is still intact. I picked it up used about 20 years ago. In my 20 years, I have abused it!

Cast iron, made in China. Spend the big bucks and get a Wilton Tradesman and will it to your grandkids. It will outlast them.

I remember reading years ago that the HF vise was one to stay away from.

............Or look around for old stuff in yard/ estate sales.

Agree or check the various online local sales websites. I bought an old USA Reed for $50 a few years ago. I have throughly abused it. I would suggest you keep looking to replace it “when” you break it.

I bought an old forged one. The new China cast won't take much of a beating. I am also not a fan of the rotating base. Doesn't stand up to hammer work without slipping.

Years ago I bought a Yost FSV-4 vise. Built like a brick commode, the "FS" means forged steel.. So last year I started looking for the 6" variety which would have been a FSV-6. Can't find one. All I can find is the ADI-6. So I contact Yost and ask what's going on. The good forged unit (FSV) was dropped because of "competitive pressure" and now all that's available is the ADI version (Ductile Iron). I bought a Ridgid F-60 forged vise.

yeah looks like I'm gona have to find a used one. I only bought this one because I needed a vise right quick

...........Or build your own LOL............

(By the way I really like this guy's videos)

.........Or build your own REALLY BIG VISE.....

My Wilton Tradesman 8 inch skull cracker. USA made. I think they moved production to Taiwan but I think still some USA made versions out there. Not cheap but awesome vise. You might consider something like this:

X2 (OK, really X3) on anything Wilton. I found a 3.5" Bullet a while ago, it's the best vice I've ever seen. Grips like death and smooth as silk. I got mine cheap because someone "fixed" it wrong and I had to reassemble it correctly but even at full price it is worth it. If something happened to it I'd go get another one tomorrow.

Also agree on the Wilton. I paid $20 for mine. Got it from a dealership that went out of business. It's probably over 25 years old. Hold everything solid as a rock.

Wilton 4-1/2 " utility vise. Not a Tradesman and I haven't had that long but looks like a nice vise for the money.
