RECENTLY OBTAINED LA 360 BLOCK & CRANK & FROM MEMBER YIELED some interesting info !!

I noticed 360 crank was very heavy and well built upon inspection , I pulled a 68 (340) steel crank out of inventory and compared the 2 and this was the results !!!
Photo # 1 & # 2 (360) crank
#3 (340) crank
I just never figured a iron 360 crank would weigh more than a 340 steel unit.

The 360 has bigger mains and a longer stroke. That alone would make it heavier, but it still didn’t have enough mass in the counterweights to internally balance it.

FWIW, A 360 can be internally balanced without Mallory Metal if you use light rods (like Eagle/Scat I beam) and light pistons (like SRP flattops).

I've got a 360 cast steel Eagle crank, but it's already been drilled for lighter rods & pistons. But Eagle advertises it as having a "typical" weight of 55 lbs. Their 360 forged steel version is advertised as having a "typical weight" of 59lbs.

The 360 isn’t drilled through the rod journals either.

the weight difference is no surprise.

I've used only truck cranks when we raced .most went 63 plus , never had a crank failure turned it 7200 for a whole season about 30 miles a night in a 25 race season
