I bought a 489 case.3.91,suregrip.I took the yoke off my 741 case and used it because of u joimt size.I have a whine under load.Did i do something wrong or was the gears not right to start with.It was a used pumpkin

Wow there are so many things that it could be. First it could have been noisey from the start or if it still uses a crush sleeve in the 489, you may have over tightened it or left it to loose or?

The 741 & 742 cases are simple for yoke swaps.

The 489 is problematic that way due to the crush sleeve.

One reason I avoid the 489s, the older ones are easier to swap pinion seals & the yokes too with no potential issues.

If it has a crush sleeve eliminator kit just retorque to spec if not its gotta come apart and have the pinion preload reset with crush sleeve or eliminator.

I'd have to agree 100% on the crush sleeve being the issue. There really not meant to be reused. I'm very meticulous when setting up gears & never had success reusing 1. If & when you have to yank it apart use the eliminator
