Hi!
I´m about to start restoring my A833 transmission, something i have never done before so looking for some guidance here from the mopar community.
The trans I´m about to restore is from a 68 Dart, it will now take place in a 71 Duster:
Maincase: C-97622
Tailhouse: C-97477

The transmission I´m about to restore had a whining noise from 1st, second & 3rd gear.

When reading in Jamie Passons "How to rebuild A833 transmissions" I think that the problem is the bore in the input shaft? Which I guess means that it could need replacing.

But I have another transmission from a unknown car that looks ok. Probably a B-body 66-68.
Maincase: C-97622
Tailhouse: C-96707

My question is: Would the input shafts be interchangeable between these to transmissions?

Hello C_Gum,
If you can call or e mail Brewers or Jamie.
Both are great to deal with and will steer you in the correct direction.
Stay Safe....
Happy Mopar :)

Hi, thanks for replying. Yes, good idea, I can talk to them when ordering the parts needed and see.

66fs: No, I have not started with the dissambly yet. I will begin to order a basic rebuild kit and then see what other suprises there is ahead of me when teering in to the box.
I can of course take both trannys apart but if it would be obvious that the input shaft from the other box won´t fit i rather just leave it as it is for now.

If you are talking the interface rollers between the inside back of the input gear and the mainshaft(MS) pilot;
I have never in my life heard a sound from an A833 that I could positively say was coming from there. Not saying it can't happen but just that I have no idea what it would sound like.
Nor have I ever seen a A833 damaged in those areas.

But what I really want to say, is, that if at all possible, I would NOT swap a used input from one used cluster to another. That would be risking more noise, as those parts usually wear in together.

Just so you know, IIRC there are FOUR different A833 input gears, by the tooth-count. But all 68 boxes with the 1x23 input should be the same.
If yur gonna swap stuff, just put the short tail housing and M/S from the Dart box, into the long-tail main-box.

Typically all new bearings, counter shaft, gaskets, seals, rear bushing, and small parts. I agree with AJ/FormS, keep the gear sets/housings together if you can. Carefully inspect the synchro assys and synchro teeth on the gears. Don't throw any parts away until you get it together and try it. Use 90 wt gear oil.

Thanks everybody for the response!
I Think I start up by ordering a basic rebuild kit from brewers and tear up and inspect the first trans.

But then it seems that I should be able to get it working with the other trans if the first one is total crap.

Have a Nice day everyone
