The biggest problem I see, is the companies in the supply chain won't carry inventory. It costs money to have something in stock. So the answer is to have as little as possible on hand. When this happens all down the chain, we end up the loser. I saw this in the grocery store business. Their goal is to have zero back room stock. The customer is always the one to get it up the rear. I don't think it has anything to do with covid.

I dont know what shops are doing. Local parts stores dont have common parts for a 2005 camry. I have to shop Rock Auto for basics. Their shipping has been decent.
I had to buy a cat back exhaust from Canada via ebay, under 200 bucks. VS dealer bargain price $1900. ( 3. 02 sensors partial zero emissions vehicle)Ebay's shipping is not accurate and I'm only 2.5 hours from Ontario. I hope it's not several weeks but I wont die either.
 
Ordered a dash pad from 'the dash pad factory' as they were recommended for their ABS repro. That was Jan 29th. I think Im out that $315. sigh of the times.
 
Seems like summit and others don't stock much any more. Most things are drop shipped now. Communication is not good either.

All goes back to not wanting to have inventory. Then you're left with hoping their suppliers aren't some **** company, or the company that they get raw materials from. We lose either way.
I bought new furniture in October. We finally got it a few weeks ago. In talking to the delivery guys, they told me that the company (Lazy Boy) only hired back 60% of their work force. So, customers are waiting six months for their purchases, but they won't hire more workers.

Recently I ordered from Summit a couple of things of which everything was in stock albeit at 2 different locations - OH and GA. One part from OH shipped by FedEx and was delivered samn bear the next day. The other from GA shipped the next day by UPS. That one took damn near a week to get to me
 
Everything is messed up...I agree using the covid reason is just an excuse for poor customer service...I have been waiting since February of my new 21 Ram Classic pickup every week its a different ship date from the dealer and the "Ram hotline" ... I sent a rocker arm to Hughes Engines for inspection via UPS and it took a week and a half to get there from N.J. I kept checking the tracking number and it was UPSs fault. " operational problem " was the reason... they had no problem taking my $16 to ship one aluminum rocker though! Jegs and Summit are great until you have to call and change or cancel an order via phone be prepared for an hour plus. I recently purchased a set of Indy rockers from two brothers in Maryland rather than have them shipped I drove the 8 hour plus round trip to get them as I didn't trust the post office or UPS to get them to me in a timely manner. I did however order tires from Summit on Monday and I had them on Wednesday which is normal when I wanted to modify the order was when I had a problem they did text me back but it took a few hours . I find myself buying more from my local well stocked speed shop lately as their prices are almost the same as mail order.

Your truck may be held up because of a lack of computer chips and what else. It will only get worse. That idiot Reagan started moving the mining and working of rare earth metals to China, and his boy Bush finished off the job. The US has one rare earth mine and it was shut down long ago. It will likely never open again. It’s in California BTW.

Why is that a big deal? Because rare earth metals are used in virtually everything we use today. Cell phones, computers, GPS...just about anything electronic. Sadly, it’s used extensively in virtually all of our sophisticated weapons systems.

So where do we get the stuff from?? China. And who manufactures a large amount of pieces for those weapons systems? China.

It would seem to a 9th grade educated fool like me that’s a horrible policy. If for no other reason that dependency on a hostile nation for self defense is an idiotic philosophy. Plus, it makes espionage and the theft of all kinds of technology China could never develop on its own.

Just stupid policy. And Ronny got the ball rolling.
 
My buddy and I ordered roller cams from the same company. I ordered mine 2 weeks earlier. He had his in about 6 weeks I’m on week 9. They told him they had cores but was way behind and thinking about a third shift. His is a sbc. So are they doing all sbc cams first.then Ford then mopar. Not happy.

Yep. Low production stuff is always last.
 
Part of the problem is taxes. I retired from Boeing a couple years ago, so this is fact. Washington state taxes you on inventory every quarter. Big companies came up with JIT, just in time. If we only had one black box in inventory, it saved in state taxes. Unfortunately, if the box failed functional test, we were screwed. It took a month, at minimum, to get a replacement. The production line doesn't slow down or stop. We had dozens of aircraft(747's), waiting on the flight line for a couple of parts. Boeing bit the bullet and had at least 2 in inventory to get the aircraft delivered to the customer on time. Companies keep minimum inventory so they don't get stiffed by state and federal taxes. JMO.

One of the power plants I worked at in North Dakota had a twin sister in South Dakota. Both units jointly bought an LP rotor and a boiler circulating pump as common inventory. South Dakota taxes inventory. North Dakota does not. Guess where both of them were stored. This is not a trick question.

It got especially bad when China was allowed into the WTO... look up "Death by China".... At the time of the making of that documentary, over 50,000 manufacturing factories, to include everything from silicon chips to mom and pop operations, had shut down or moved overseas....
 
Think I will cancel both my orders and use different companies. The cam thing really gets me. Should be first come first serve.
 
I'm waiting for my solid roller cam from Voodoo. The phone guy, Will, said they're having a problem getting cam blanks from their suppliers. I only include his name because he was straight up honest, and didn't blow smoke up my kilt. My delivery date is August for my cam and roller lifters. Thanks to Rumblefish and his advice, I'll wait until I get the cam and lifters I want.

Yep. And August may get here and you still might not have it. Cam cores are like hens teeth right now.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that there isn’t much steel coming in from China at the moment. That means whatever steel is made here is getting bought up by the big players in the industry. The OEM’s, big manufacturing and such.

The little guys who buy steel in relatively small amounts can’t compete with a company that orders steel in the hundreds of tons at a time.

Another reason why letting all that manufacturing move overseas was bad.

I got a call from 'the dash pad factory' after I contacted my CC company to start a claim, they said since it was past the due date nothing could be done. BUT I received a call from TDPF and they said it was being shipped next week...….Although the light has been turned on....Im not holding my breath. I hope its the purdiest dash pad I have seen. this order was placed on Jan 29th. Staying positive. the rate at which this build is going I cant blame the parts pipeline, only my own snail pace of putting the parts together. Hoping for more productivity in July when I get a better work schedule.
