My nephew has a 2016 Ram w/5.7 Hemi. He said it was loosing power and took to dealer and they told him it needs a new cam and rockers on the driver side replaced. Does this make sense. Why would the rockers be bad on one side and the cam. $5300 parts and $1800 labor

That’s crazy. When you can get a new motor for less

They have roller rockers ,likely seized up and wiped out the cam ,more common than you think.

Chrysler put a whole new engine in my ram when that happened...It was a siezed lifter, that wiped the cam. Ask them to drop the pan, and do not clean it. Tell them you want to inspect it when they do. There will be a lot of metal shavings...Be sure to take pics of the metal that has circulated throughout the whole oiling system... Then do not settle for anything less that a new engine.. It is likely they have not even dropped the pan yet.

They have roller "lifters", not rockers.

The cost likely would come from labor involved in taking everything apart to do the work. Still, my son works at a dodge dealership and that's something he has done in a day. The factory lifters are 4 or 5 hundred bucks for all of them and the cam aint 5k. Neither are the rockers....

Something isn't right

I was thinking the same thing. 5k+ in parts? Are you sure he didn't get quoted a new engine?

An eagle rebuilt engine through the dealer will be about 13k all in,

It's right, happend to my 2011 ram almost two years ago, fairly common, except at the time they did mine Chrysler had no inventory in lifters so they went after market which lasted a year, they did it again but just the ones that failed, this time the cam was good, lasted 10 months, failed again then finnaly with a NEW service manager they re-did the job with Mopar parts and another two yeR warranty this is a VERY labour intensive job which is why I didn't do it cause it was my daily driver, the bill was north of 5k! Some say the problem exist with the MDS system and excessive idling ( I live in Canada so in the winter she idles in yhe driveway warming up ) there is a aftermarket set of parts to delete the MDS solenoids but honestly after what I went through with aftermarket I opted for OEM, any all fixed now, gave that truck to my son and bought a 2019 limited fingers crossed I don't go through it again but I loaded this one with extra warrenty, lol

labor was quoted at 1800, maybe that's parts and the 5k is labor?

That's what I was thinking. I don't what their labor rate is, but here in Oregon our GM labor rate is $140/hr. So the $1,800 in labor is north if 12 hours. But if the $5,300 is labor that is more like 37 hours, which seems crazy.

We just did a Duramax, where a guy out def in the fuel and ran it. The labor hours on that was close to 40, because everything fuel related had to be replaced.

Yeah, I just sent my son a message. I'll report back if responds.

Yet another good reason NOT to buy new garbage. I had a 2003 Ram 5.7, bought it with the knowledge that the motor was noisy, but I decided that I didn't have the interest in fixing it, so I sold it to the next guy. Had a 5.7 Magnum that puked the trans at 100k miles, was quoted 6k for a rebuild, put in a used one and dumped that POS too.

Parts where 2500 and rest was labor. I told my sister in law to buy a long block and gasket kit, shipping and core charge $3800. I’ll replace it, she pays the core charge and I keep the motor and have it for a backup for when my 5.7 goes out in my Barracuda

I can only find crate motors for 2015 and up. Is there a difference in the 2014. I can’t seem to find anything on them.

Mabey theres more to it than there saying , guides, tensioners chains ,.

He already clarified the cost.

Other that that, guides would not be done for a cam swap. Tensioner and timing "chain" don't cost that much either.

I know it's just semantics at this point but the rockers have rollers that wear out and wipe out the cam not the lifters .

Google it I just changed one the other day

So you think on a 5.7 hemi, the rocker touches the cam? No....
