Found any Dexron II lately? My 1987 Ram with a slant and OD833 takes Dexron II.
I have read that although the modem Dexron superseded the older versions the newer product is thinner in viscosity. Just one of the reasons the new product is Dexron IV and not Dexron II. All part of the mileage improvement game. I have no idea whether this would make a difference in an A833. What I put in my A833 at the last service is Pennzoil Sycromesh fluid.First choice in the FSM is Dexron. Any modern Dexron now supersedes DexronII. But if you can find II it will work fine. I prefer it over gear oil because it doesn't have to warm up to shift smoothly.

It shifts really nice. Part of the recent service was a clutch change and with that I spent some time with off set dowels and really dialed in the bell housing, went through the shifter linkage and there is the new clutch, so there are several other improvements also.
Dexron is reverse compatible. I think you know what I mean.Found any Dexron II lately?
And do you really think the manufacturers are testing / certifying the new Dexron formulas to be the best in 50 year old manual transmissions?Dexron is reverse compatible. I think you know what I mean.
I did not say it would not work, especially in a light, low power vehicle. I did say I wonder if it is the best choice. It shifts really smooth in my A903.

I've seen both gear oil & ATF used in these transmissions, but ATF is factory recommended. I would think the ATF Chrysler uses in my Dakota, ATF+4 is fine for your trans.
In general, GL4 lube for manual trannys, GL5 for rear differentials
I always get a kick out of these debates, they all work. Both my '69 Swinger and '71 Demon had gear oil in them from the factory, had them apart a lot from street racing. I always put 80/90 gear oil back in them. I live in northern Illinois, wonder how I ever got to work in the winter if I couldn't shift it with gear oil in them. I use Pennzoil Syncrowmesh oil now, works for me. Most of us are not driving these cars in the snow and cold anyway.
