Your premise is "Dollar for Dollar", so why not consider the 360. Regardless! It also sounds like you really like 318s, and are trying to convince the rest of us.
This ^^ could not be further from the truth. I plainly stated that the 318 is not the better engine. I said if dealing with a lower budget, such as 2.5-3.5k, is the 318 faster? I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, it's a relative discussion to the common thread we see here on FABO. Just for the record, right now I have 3 vehicles with 360's and one on the stand, and I have 3 vehicles with 318's and one on the stand. I answered why the 360 was left out in post 19.

Then why not take post 19 and spend the rest of the budget on tires and suspension?

I just don't see the point of arguing about second place

lol... so why did u even click on this thread ??? it doesn't say 360 in the title, it says 318 and 340. Shoot, lets just throw in 440 while were at it.... Yeehaw !!

Buy a late 60s cast 318, if your lucky and it's got thick walls in the casting, bore it out to 4.010" and install 340 slugs. Your welcome.

i thought we were talking SBM, thats why i brought up the 360, because it just isnt logical to ignore the 360
but since we're not limited to a SBM, lets toss in an LS engine

of course... why would anyone build a 5.2 when they could build a 5.3..... mods, just delete the thread... LOL.. It's officially off the rails. :)

318willrun. Why not limit it to SBM with a 3.31 rod ratio to exclude the 360 if that's what you want to do.

well, I thought the title and opening post was pretty clear. Folks will throw out anything but what the thread is about, regardless. If it was about stock stroke 360's, somebody by post 4 would say "why not 408". It's who we are here.. unfortunately. I really thought this subject was worth the conversation. I'd take the 340 in a heart beat both for free. But, if I had to buy and build, would a guy be better off with a 318? Even up to 4k to spend?? Just food for thought.... which motor goes faster ??

Does the 5.2 get any love? They are as cheap as 318s.
318 magnum with 4bbl runs about the same as a stock 340. They are a very good engine. Even if somebody bought a 300 dollar 5.2, on a 3k budget they'd have 2700 more dollars to play with vs the 340 guys 1500. 340 guy is in a world of trouble... in my opinion.

This sure makes me feel good about my 318. And I have lots more money to spend on it than I thought. And I don't have to look for 340 blocks anymore. I am a convert now and I really like your YouTube channel. And further more I'm gonna put a big 318 decal on my hood and wear it proud!

Just be careful. The more you spend on that 318, the more it would've made sense to start with a 340/360. :poke:

I get your point and agree with you, hands down the teener is the choice. Matter of fact I have 2 that I plan on building, one being 67-68 casting. The other I haven’t checked yet. 340’s are pricey as of late and I just don’t see the justification. Also the thick wall 318 and 360 blocks are commanding big money. If you’re building for high horse power you need an X or R block. If its 400 hp your after and especially if its a non numbers matching car, go with the teener.

It can, at a dollar point turn that way. I'm not sure what the dollar amount would be ...

No doubt about it, the 318 can be made to go fast economically. If it's a "one off" go ahead and have fun with it just realize you are probably going to lose most of your investment. If you plan on staying in the hobby to realize future projects you will come out money ahead with the 340 and stay in step as the hobby costs rise.
An old fellow who's opinion i value always said "you have to build/buy what everyone wants!"
He also said "you can dress a 10 in rags...she's still a 10"

I just voted and I’m quite surprised by the poll results. Personally I think they are beating on you. I dig the **** your doing, don’t stop. The world needs opposing viewpoints and contrarians are cool.

Leave the 340’s for the restoration crowd.

It's not quite that simple when you decide to sell a nice 1969 318 Dart compared to a '69 340 Dart.
And the 360 crowd won't like this but the same applies to a 1969 360 Dart.
It doesn't have to be a restoration to realize what the 340 brings to the table.

10’s are 10’s now. Ten years from now she is a 6 and your looking for another 10 (unless she cooks and cleans like your mama then maybe 6.5 or 7).

If someone is buying a 340 for $1500....... they don’t want a free 318.

I’d go for the nuthin special 360 myself.

Of course....... the real question is........can you build a 10 second 318 powered package for $5k?

Can you build a 10 second 360 for 5k? Only if you live in a world where magazine and web articles are real and not fairy tales.

If its not number matching it don’t mean ****. You will never your costs. If you think it does your having a fantasy. The only non numbers matching car that brings big money is a vintage muscle car with a modern motor.
