Next weekend I'm strapping my Duster down and see if I met my goal or not. The Tennessee Valley Mopar show in Huntsville, AL is July 3rd and will have MuleTown Mobile dyno on site. I haven't touched the car since #318Fest and plan to do some small adjustments if I fall alittle short of 300 on the spot.... If I'm way short; I just scored some R/T heads and will be moving over to them after some massaging. Either way, in the height of the 318 saga, drama, hype, lies, and half truths I aim to bring some new evidence to support the cause! 300whp or bust!
1970 318 .030 / KB167
Home hacked J-915s 2.02/1.60
Hughes .491/.500 208/214 - 110
Edelbrock RPM / 750 Holley annular
727/4.56/28in

I'll be retrying this Oct 9th at the #MoparVsBrandXstreetcarShowdown; if I fail this go around

Is it about 10:1 compression with those heads and pistons? And how much $$$ have you dumped into it...?:)

One thing nice about a DYNO. If you don’t hit the number you were aiming for. Recalculating, RECALCULATING!!! Lol

I’ll poop in everyone’s Cheerios. I’ll say it makes 215 rwhp. But I hope I’m wrong.

Should be right at 9:1, as is. Previously sold this engine for $300 and the guy filled the crankcase with water after an improper intake install... got it back for Free and put a set of $375 pistons in it, then bearings/seals; stole the cam/lifters and top end from my Cuda’s 340 as well as my Super Bee’s old carb.... So honestly, not much since I started $300 in the green... However “result$” may have varied had I started from scratch... I did have to pay for fancy pushrods in a pinch.

300, at the wheels.
This must be one of them pipe dream threads for 318 lovers. Haha keep smokin that ****!
It'd be a fkn miracle!

Lol kiddin.

Never hurts to have hopes n dreams..

Disagree button if you crawl on all fours and eat dog **** off the front lawn like an animal.

Well I ususally get majorly blasted for posting similar comments. What I keep hearing is "340-360 cores are too expensive" I want to know how much $$$ one would dump into a 318 for 300 HP at the wheels...any takers? What you end up finding is, basically the only thing 318 is the block itself and maybe the crank. that is what no one wants to acknowledge it seems. The rest of it is 340-360 heads or aftermarket designed after 340-360 heads, a stroker crank, aftermarket high comp pistons, a cam with matching valve springs...and mostly always port work...am I good on the recipe? Really I ask because I dont know. i have built. ran 318s but never did anything more than cam, 4 barrel and headers.

There are some things that need considered, shared or not between the 3. Chamber alignment/size vs bore.
The lighter floating rod, then its limitations..but they always go to the late 'heavier' rod.
But mostly, people confuse goals and expectations with stock 1.78 head builds. Low expectation from titles like "lowly 318 build", "broke *** build"... it's a setup for the illusion that the 318 is some secret power house motor.
It's like most motors of small cid...nothin wrong with them. They just get passed for bigger, stronger designed blocks that cost the same in some marketplaces.
318 wont handle the same rpm and power a 340/360 will and it's due to the main saddles and shorter less beefy caps.
What's the max power handling difference between them...
Could be 100/2000 rpm ..
could be beans and cornbread with some tabasco

Let's hear some 273 guys argue with the 318ers while we're here haha

I appreciate your input. Like said alot of folks don't want to realistically talk about it. I got thrown out of a 318 thread because I basically made it known I wouldn't spend alot of $$$ tryin got make a 318 into a 340. I'd start with the right core engine as a foundation and make that initial investment. In fact as a youngster i did exactly that had a 318 B body which was too big and should have been a 383, I then got an A body found out what a 340 was and sought one out. Its just a natural progression. I realize that's just me. You cant even get to the point of telling your story with 318 guys, they get butthurt over the 318-340 debate.

I dunno man, I had 318 guys gang up on me 3 to one in one of the 318 threads. I'm an asshole and deserve it but dern...its just the internet. I think they put me on ignore and I them LOL! :)

hey at least they put you on ignore because of a 318. I put a gaggle of guys on ignore because of their coronavirus comments. Lol.

273 guys are hard on slant 6 guys. 318 guys are hard on 273 guys. 340 guys are hard on 318 guys.
360 guys are hard on 340 guys...then 340 guys remind them at the stop light how 2.02 valve heads,10.5 compression, better flowing manifolds and higher rpms make up for 20 cubic inches...

Fixed.

Back in January of this year, the first pull on my 318 (baseline, no tune) was 254.7 hp. On my 3rd pull after re-jetting the 750 Holley DP, we got 273.3 hp. and 411 lb. tq. at the rear wheels. The header gasket was blown out at the number 2 cylinder, plugs were fouled, and had a worn cap and rotor. I've since pulled the engine due to a blow head gasket but I'm thinking it could have hit 300 hp. with a little more work.
