Hi team, been offered an Air Gap for my 360 and wondering if it will fit under a stock ‘66 Barracuda hood. I was hoping to use the 273 Commando air cleaner and keep it stealthish...but thinking I might be pushing my luck. Any one tried this with success?

Ah thanks, good to know. Are you also using the tin pot original air cleaner, the one that came with the Formula S which is what I was hoping to use?

Yep, a 2" air filter will fit even with a flat base. I had an 10" with a flat, but recently changed to a 14" with a drop base for more air flow.

I never tried, but I'm almost certain the 273 Commando air cleaner will be too tall. 10" and 14" pics

Thanks for the quick replies and pics, much appreciated

As mentioned, you will need a drop base. I ran the unsilenced air cleaner on my set up for that look.

However, you are losing performance because restrictive breathing with that design of air cleaner

Hey- not for nothing. I was running an LD340 on a small block in my 66’ and the FI Tech fuel injection which sits pretty high and I changed the lower plate for the cleaner and run a 3” air filter. I also modified the chrome portion to clear the fuel lines and it actually sits over and around the FI Tech unit and clears the hood. I had it rechromed after the mods. Most people cannot pick up on its TBI. PM me and I will get a few photos when I visit my car. Lol!

I'm pretty sure the 273 air cleaner will be too tall to clear. However, the 13 inch Mopar Performance air cleaner will fit if you want to keep a semi-factory look. It will also flow better than the original ten inch 273 air cleaner.

Hey 65 Cuda 340? Why do you have an emissions decal on your drs fender? Just admiring your engine bay and noticed it.

Two reasons: 1. it is almost the correct decal for the 340 motor (70 decal, 71 motor), and 2. it helps hide some of the damage from a battery that splashed acid all over the inner fender many years ago.

I couldn't get that combo to fit on my '66 360/Holley/Air Gap without modifying something, so, I ended up cutting the hood and putting a scoop on. It's a race car anyway, so, wasn't too worried about keeping it too stock.

Thanks for the info guys, I do have a scoop but as the car is pretty nice I’m loath to go the scoop direction even though I just bought one, ‘just in case’.

My Dad put cut a hole and mounted a scoop on the hood of his 67 Charger. After it was mine, it took me years to find a mint hood for the car.

And after an accident messed up the hood of my 65 Barracuda, it took me years to find a mint hood for it.

So I'm strongly against cutting up a good stock hood. If you really want a scoop, better to put it away and run a fiberglass hood.

Just my opinion, your results may differ. . . .

I used a (13"?) drop base off a ford air cleaner for mine. No modification necessary. 383 though.

On my slant six 63 Valiant, the Commando 273 air cleaner didn't quite clear the hood. So I replaced the filter element with a shorter one. Same diameter, not as tall. That did the trick. Of course, I'm sure it doesn't flow as well as a taller air filter, but it's fine for a slant six. Don't know about a 360.

(Of course, while checking fit, I removed the latch, then slowly and gently let the hood down.)

Can’t argue with that. Here in the UK there is no chance of finding a spare hood if I cut mine for a scoop. On the other hand, we only live once
