1963 Dart 170 2 Door Post Resto

-
just schrolled down the first page of this build and wow! what a transformation so far. you should be proud of what you've achieved that's for sure.
neil.
Thanks. I'm no expert by any means, but am getting better as I go and am pleased with how it's progressing. Started hand sanding the epoxy lightly to take care of a few spots that got dust settled in the primer. I wiped and tack ragged and blew the car off at least 8 times, but must have missed a little in a crevice somewhere. Oh, well, at least it's only the primer coat and very little dust. Should have it in 2K tonight or tomorrow. Probably tomorrow as I plan to go over the entire car again to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Well, a little forward, a little backward yesterday. Got the car all sanded and ready for the 2K primer. Cleaned and cleaned and cleaned again to make sure no dust this time. Mixed up the 2K and started to spray. Roof went ok, drivers side came next and gun started acting up a little giving me a few runs I wasn't totally happy with (spraying light to spraying heavy...must have had a slight blockage). Then on the passenger side it got even worse. Spitting a bit and not laying down very nice.

Got it all done, but will require a little more patience sanding it out as there's a little texture to how it laid out. Block sanded the roof (found a few minor imperfections that the 2K showed and filled) and the pillars and resprayed the roof after a good thorough gun cleaning and setup again. Much better this time, laid out better than it has so far, including the epoxy.

I figure a good block sanding and a couple more coats of 2k and another block sand and I should be putting it in sealer hopefully by mid week next week. Then the decision on whether or not to put color on the interior myself or wait to have a shop do it all. If I do it, it allows me to have the car more assembled when going for final exterior paint, thus less chance of scratching anything during reassembly. Also allows me to get the door hinge area good before doors go back on and access is limited without removing front fenders. Downside is a shop will most definitely do a better job being setup better for it. Less chance of runs and or imperfections getting into the paint.

Making progress...

Got the initial coat of 2K sanded. Actually went way better than expected. The rough side sanded nicer than the smoother side ironically. Pretty much took care of the final imperfections. Touched up 1 or 2 small items I missed originally and hit it with another coat of 2K. Roof is all sanded and just waiting on more 400grit sandpaper to come in to finish the rest.

Added the seam sealer over the weekend as well. I taped off everything around where I was applying it on the outside of the body for nice clean lines. Inside I just used a body putty spreader on the main cabin floor kinda like original and my finger in the trunk area and over the wheel wells for a little cleaner finish. Happy with the results.

I used the evercoat OEM bead 2 part epoxy seam sealer in a tube for this. Used 2 tubes. The best advice I can give if you want to use this is get the proper gun for it. I was warned about it but figured my heavier regular gun would be fine...wrong. It was brutal on the hands as you had to apply a great deal of pressure to get it out of the gun. Also make sure you are completely ready as it cures pretty quickly. You only get about 8 minutes working time. The nice part is that it works really nice and doesn't sag or run at all on angled/vertical surfaces. Cures nice and smooth and hard. Has a little flex but not very much (it is epoxy after all). Don't think this is going anywhere.

Plan to pull out the trunk lid, hood and doors now to prep them for epoxy as I am waiting on sandpaper (should arrive by the end of the week) then I can apply sealer to the body and be completely ready for paint (plan to wet sand sealer to 600 for final prep).

Put in a couple orders for parts and waiting to hear back on my "big list" from a local supplier. This should hopefully cover most of what I need to finish assembly besides upholstery and some clips.

Stay tuned, more to come.

Got my new headlights today!!! Super happy with the quality too. I was looking for an alternative to the sealed beam bulb as I wanted better illumination, not to mention a little different look. While poking around I came across these on a VW site I used to buy parts from (previous Bug resto). Got good reviews and I have always been happy with their parts so I figured why not? They are only $35US each (paid $47cdn on CDN site).

They came in yesterday and I was impressed with the quality. They are all glass construction, no cheap plastic crap. They are also SAE and DOT approved, which is a big plus as I have had hassles in the past with non DOT approved headlights. They have a clear lens with the reflector behind the bulb, which should result in much better light output. My upgrade to LED bulbs later, will see how well they work. Also like how they have a little darker chrome look to them as well. Hopefully they fit the factory buckets without any modifications

Finally some forward motion again...

The body is in final coat of high build, and as I was waiting on new order of sandpaper to come in I decided not to sit on my hands and decided to work on the doors, hood and trunk lid. I put the body on its side and covered it with a few drop sheets to keep the dirt/dust off it and moved it as much as I could to one side.

I then set up my parts stands and placed the hood, trunk and 1 door on them to strip and prime them. I would have done both doors but room was getting tight and I realized my dash was sitting on my 4th stand...oops. I guess it will just have to follow. Got the panels nice and clean using the stripping discs I purchased.

Had multiple delays over the week so little got done (unrelated). Today I decided it was time to at least get them primed, so out I went. I cleaned them all down and wiped them over with cleaner. I hung up the hinge I had ready and the grille support I placed on some paper under the door to spray while I was at it. Didn't get the other hinge done as it has a lot of tight spots so I'm just going to blast it and spray it when I flip the panels to do the outside.

None of the panels need any real work, just a couple small dents on the trunk lid. A skim of glaze and then high build should suffice. I have some light pitting from the surface rust on the underside of the hood so I may hit it with a heavy coat of high build or glaze to fill them (small) then seal it. Will be putting hood insulation on so it won't be seen anyway, but I will know. OCD is a curse...lol.

I'm off next week so if I can get enough time in the shop I hope to be sealing the body and installing body panels by the end of the week. We will see. Life commitments always manage to come up...not that I'm complaining...just really want to see this on the road this summer.

So, had a little hiatus from the car for a week or so. During the cleaning process had a fleck of metal flick back at me and get under my safety glasses and into my eye, requiring a trip to hospital to get it removed. Then a trip to optometrist to get it properly removed (doctor apparently was NOT an eye specialist at all. She used drops in my eye to "freeze" it. Felt it. Used more...still felt it. One more time...Still felt it, so she went ahead and used a swab to remove it...hurt like heck). Found out when I made an appointment with my optometrist a few days later (got metal out but still had to be cleaned up better), that the drops she kept trying to freeze my eye were for dialating my eye and do nothing for pain...go figure. Any way, had to keep away from dust for a few days while it healed up. That pretty much killed any work on the car for the week.

That and kinda went WAY off plan and bought another project that wasn't supposed to happen until this one was completely finished. Couldn't pass it up as it was so rust free and the price was right. My wife has always wanted a classic truck. I wound up finding a 51 or 52 International (at my brothers place so I haven't confirmed year yet...and yes I know, not mopar...forgive me as I have never been brand loyal, just like what catches my eye, regardless of make). Truck is 1/2 ton long bed with zero rust and has never been messed with. Plan is once the Dart is finished to roll this one in and start on it. Wife is adamant to have her hands in this one. Any way...back at the Dart

Back at it and got the outer panel epoxied. Only needed a couple small dings touched up and went to high build. Got the 3 panels all block sanded, resprayed and hand sanded ready for sealer. Hoping to get sealer on them in the next couple days. Looking super smooth. Please with how they came out. Once in sealer I plan to let them cure a couple days and flip them again and apply color and clear to the inners. Then back to the main body and hand sand the final high build coat, apply sealer and do the same for color with the trunk, inside and jambs. If they come out decent, I will decide if I want to try my hand at a full body spray. Gotta start sometime right? Have done lots of primer sprays, and one tack coat in color but never did a full respray. Picked up a top quality gun for a great price so that should help. Time will tell.

I am not a big fan of most early A bodies but those cheapo 170 two door post sedans trip my trigger.

What color will it be? One if thw prettiest Charger R/T' s we sold new at my dealership was an Old Man Tan job with the dark red pearl vinyl top and matching bucket seat interior.

Most of us puked when we first saw it but we grew to love it. Maybe it had something to do with the late 60's owner and the 20-something curvy blonde on his arm...what a combo!!!

BTW you should be very proud of the quality work you are doing...

I got a piece of metal in my eye about 30 years ago and they got it out ok, but it was a bit of a scary time. Hope all turns out well for you as it did for me. I think once you're done shooting some color on those parts you'll have enough confidence to move on to the main show. Lol

cool truck, doesn't look in bad shape either. love the patina, although i guess the wife will want it painted?
neil.
Thanks. Actually in really good shape, no rust, just a few dents to work out. Wife is actually fine running the patina look for a while. Will eventually do a full resto, but early plan will be redo the interior (so it's clean and comfortable), go through the mechanicals, and drive it for a while. Then tear into it and clean, straighten and paint the frame and body to bring it back to pretty much original.

Thanks for the compliment. I no pro by any means, and work goes slow as I am overly critical of my own work, but it's coming along. The color I have selected (actually picked up the first batch of color today) is PFQ 2020 F8 Green. It will have gunmetal grey paint on the dash and doors inside with black headliner, carpet, and seats and door panels will be mostly black with some greys in the material inserts. If it comes out like I envision, should look pretty good

Yeah, unfortunately it isn't the first time down this path for me. Never had an issue ever until the last couple years. This is the second time this happened, both fluke incidents, go figure. First time I went straight to my optometrist and in and out in 15 minutes with no discomfort or issues. This time they just closed so I went to emerg and what a mistake. 3 hours and the discomfort from her rooting around in my eye with the swab was unbearable due to no freezing, and I still had to go to optometrist to get it cleaned up proper. Second time there as good as first, fast and no pain at all. Any how, all healed now with no lasting effects at least.

Picked up 2 quarts of color today to shoot the jambs and inside and trunk, along with all the clear. If I do a good job I will tackle the rest. Still have a little sanding and primer work to do, but soon we should see some color. Wish me luck.

Break a leg, I think you have it under control!

So, final colors decided. Picked out and picked up the official interior color for dash and door uppers. This will go with black headliner, carpet and seats, with a slight variation on the inserts in the seats and door panels. Color is Chrysler Graphite Grey. Looks black in my picture. I am thinking it will dry lighter maybe, we will see. Either way it should look good against the green and with the black interior

Making some headway again finally. Got the other door epoxy primed as well as the 4 rims. If course the outer of the rims reacted and bubbled on a couple. Had to resand them twice to take care of it. Today I decided to try out my new spray setup. Got a great deal on a Binks mach 1sl hvlp gun at a yard sale new for $20. Had to order the pressure can but still a bargain in the end. Tried it with the color and wow, this thing makes painting easy. Never even really set it up. Got 2 runs but that was my fault. I can live with them where they are. I put the second coat on too early, combined with the humidity being really high (showing 75% in my shop). Paint is taking WAY too long to dry. Will do the clear tomorrow when the base dries overnight.

Also heard from my upholstery guy. He got the rear seat done. Hopes to have the front and door panels done early this week

Very nice! You really scored with that Binks. I have a Binks #7 model that I bought new in '72. At the time that was the top of the line gun for shooting automotive finishes. It still works perfect, just a little outdated because it's a siphon feed, lol.

Thanks for all the compliments. I am no pro by any means and they aren't perfect but I am really happy with how they came out.

Picked up my interior today. (sorry no pics yet as the pictures I have are the ones the upholstery guy sent and the quality is horrible). It looks pretty good. I'll get some pics shortly.

Also got the front door in final coat of high build today. Hoping if all goes to plan I can get it hand sanded to 400 and be ready to apply sealer to the doors, hood and trunk. Plan right now is to paint the inside of all the removed panels and clear. Then put them outside (weather permitting), cover them and sand the final high build on main body, then sealer and spray the jambs and inside cabin and trunk. Then reinstall panels. If I haven't totally messed it up at this point I plan to try painting entire car. Fingers crossed.

Added a couple more pics of wheels after tape removal and in sunlight. Interesting how color changes by light. Outside pictures are off a bit due to camera. They look close to inside pics. Just shades differ in different lights.

Thanks for the compliments. The F8 color is actually the new 2020 F8. Not sure if it's the same as the original F8 but that's the code I went with.

Got the outer of the doors, hood and trunk lid in final sealer today. Plan is to flip them, paint the inners, then seal the main body and paint the inner edges of the main body, then install the panels and then spray the outer. At least, that's the plan. How things actually go is still currently a mystery...lol.

Got pictures of the door panels today. This is the pattern I decided on. Like how the insert on the front panel runs into the rear. They should tighten up a little better and the lines are straighter than they look in pictures. Not perfect but they were done cheap, so I am pleased. They should look good installed.

Finally making some progress. We have color on body panels. Got a little dust in the clear on the trunk lid inside but I can live with it. Won't be seen inside. Could wet sand and polish. We will see. Graphite grey is looking more like black but will look good with black interior. Rest came out pretty good. I think there was a little dust inside the trunk lid that got blown out when I was spraying
