A friend of mine is putting a 440 block with 440 Source parts to create a 540 c.i. engine. The machine shop was supposed to preform oil modifications, but I don't think they were done. What modifications should be done to the 440 block, and should anything be done to the Milidon single inlet oil pump ? It looks to me that the pump holes are smaller than the block. Thanks

I used the 440 source 4.5 stroke kit. The only block mods I had to do was some clearance grinding around where the sump pipe threads on. I used the stock type oil pump with the milodon single line spacer between it and the block, longer driveshaft deal.
I didn’t do any oiling mods to the block besides changing the pump suction, but mine was never intended to be a high rpm super high horsepower build.

I like the 'ol McCandless mod of enlarging the feed passages to the mains to 9/32", and reworking the pickup hole to accept a 1/2" pickup tube.
Of course, it all depends on the desired usage and power level IMO...If he's looking to go much over 600hp in a 540, or it's gonna see a lot of strip time it's probably best to get away from the stock oiling system. Otherwise the simple mods I listed are fine and plenty of guys don't even do that and don't have problems.

Thanks for the replies. He is trying for over 700 hp, drive it to the track and race it. He has the Milidon pump, pan swinging pickup. So I will recommend the drilling out the main feeds, and check the other galleys. I would have had the lifter bores bushed, but that wasn't done. He wants to run a hydraulic roller cam.

I used a hydraulic roller in mine. I was told to make sure the top of the lifter oil band doesn’t come out of the hole, mine were fine, but I can see how that would limit your cam lift options quite a bit.

It has a girdle, but I would have preferred having new main caps installed also

My 470 stroker has a girdle with stock caps. It has been together for over 20 years. It see’s 7000 rpm every times we race it. 8000 rpm when using nos. Best time we other nos is 9.03. It came apart in 13 for a check over. Got springs snd solid roller lifters. Kim
