What do the numbers mean on a 8 3/4 diff?

Mine shows 2070741
Also has an "X" on the left side near the top.
The diff came out of a 74 Scamp, with a 5.9 Magnum. It was street racer.

The 741 housing uses a 1 3/8 diameter pinion shaft. Which is the smallest size Chrysler used for the 8 3/4. They put them behind /6, 273,318,340 and 383s back in the 60s.
741 has the X on the side. The 489 has a 9 on the side and the 742 has a 2 on the side. It's a quick way to identify them at a qlance.

Thanks for the info. I plan on having the unit rebuilt in the winter. Just did not know where to start.

AFAIK the X indicate that it is a SureGrip model.

Edit;
See below; as can be seen, AFAIK means zippo. lol.
I guess I'll just go take all my SGs out of the X cases now, and sell them separately, as they no longer need to stay in the X cases......... that will save on shipping as well.

By the way, the gear selection for a 741 is very limited, 742 is next and 489 has the most.

Food for thought, before you spend money on rebuild be sure the gear ratio you want is available

Your 74 Scamp didn’t come factory with that 8 3/4. 72 was the last year. Is it samall bolt pattern 5 on 4”or large bolt pattern 5 in 4.5”.

Where have you been, under a rock?
You know that those sure grips in that 741 housing will also fit the 742 and the 489. Lots of 741 came with an open differential and a lot came with a Sure Grip or a track lock whatever you want to call it. But if you go ahead and pull your sure grips out and want to sell them price them to where I can buy a few. Thank you

What does AFIAK mean?
