512 B build almost complete

Very awesome write up. Amazing torque. Thanks for posting the Dyno sheet. It's nice to see the results of the work done. I was also happy to see how the xr280r cam worked in that combo.
The Charger is going to be a blast to drive.
I am curious to know the pros to the hydraulic lifter on solid cam. Have heard of running solid on hydraulic but not the other way around.
The thought of tunning the cam by lifter type is cool.

another satisfied customer that got more than he expected . a very nice build .

Thanks for the kind words, but that remains to be seen. This customer has expectations that in the past have been umm, inconsistent. At one point all he cared about was "700hp" and he had that in the first configuration 466 with a higher strung 726hp- he brought it back to me later that summer and said it was too wild and to "de-tune it some" So in went some bigger dish pistons and the XR280- almost 660hp and 620 tq and he seemed satisfied although he did remark that it can't bark the tires into 4th anymore (rolls eyes). Fast forward to this winter and he admits to getting the carb and timing so far out of whack that he repeatedly floods the engine and now it uses oil. He winds up calling Indy for a 500 inch crate (600/600) and tells me its only $10,000 US. So I call Indy because he wants black INDY valvecovers and ask the nice lady about their crate program- she kindly explains that they are custom built to order and the price reflects that. In short I think Im giving him what he really wants but maybe didn't know how to ask for it? Time will tell, I think this much torque and how smooth it loads and the throttle response should make this a really fun engine to drive. J.Rob

P.S. I almost don't want to share the dyno results right away because I know he thinks he needs 700hp and he's going to be let down by only 600hp.

The plus side of him changing his mind about what he wants is......... more work for you.

Nice tq/ci out of that combo.

^ yeah, 600hp and even more tq from some cleaned up E-street heads and a pretty mild cam...

Ahhhhh, the never truly satisfied always complaining customer ……

Full disclosure- On pull #4 which is the one posted I noticed some steam coming out of the breather at the very top of the pull. So I chalked it up to high humidity/blowby/rings still coming in/ and relegated it to a part of my mind that is labeled DENIAL just like the river in Egypt. So I proceed to have lunch, attend to some other business functions and bolt on a 1" HVH style spacer hoping for more power and that I was seeing things--Well as luck would have it power was down a little and it kinda looked like a miniature steam locomotive was under the driver side breather from 4500 rpm and up. Ok, check the dipstick--it looks a little milky but kinda bubbly--wipe it off and re dip and it looked pretty normal- level is good too. Ok pull the valve covers and the sparkplugs half expecting to see one or more white and clean but no they all looked normal with a grey-chocolate hue. Turn the engine over with plugs out to see if water would show it self--Nope all good. So now I'm crossing my fingers and hoping against hope that a cylinder didn't decide to leave the chat and split below the ring travel which I have seen before and it did the exact same thing. Put on a different spacer and hit the starter and now the engine turns 3/4 of a turn and I hear the SuperStart grind and ZING! Great , Pull the exhaust, oil line, fuel line, etc... and roll engine forward in the cell and proceed to tear down the Superstart attachment. Sure enough about 2" of teeth were gone off of Superflow's propetary 9.25" diameter ring gear. So I break out the welder and get welding/pencil grinding and filing--about 2hrs later I'm ready to try again--Hit the starter and whaddayaknow? It turns over excellent with no plugs and it even sounds better than before. With another spacer configuration I warm up the engine and try another test--no dice-steam again. Ok tomorrow I will go to NAPA get some more oil/filter and some IronTite Ceramic seal--its a Hail Mary but I really don't wanna tear into this thing as it doesn't leak a drop of oil anywhere and it continues to make good power (not as much as pull 4 though). Well today I warmed it up and all was well until I fully loaded it and held WOT at 4400 RPM---Tons of steam and now the fresh oil looks like Vanilla Milkshake mixed with and Ice Coffee--So I head to McDonalds and order an ice coffee no sugar cuz its freakin hot here and resign myself to the fact that I am going to have to tear it down. It's gonna be a long night and I might as well find out what's going on because I won't be able to sleep anyways. Oh and I had a 6" section of 2" dyno water line that sprung a leak at the 2" NPT fitting so I changed that this morning because I was sick of the wet floor in that section of the cell--It seems like it is just one of those weeks. Hey I'm not complaining it could be worse--It could be something like cancer and that I can't fix. Fun, fun, fun. J.Rob

Say it ain't so! Man I remember tearing one down four times completely until I discovered why the oil pressure was dropping shortly after each build. I sure hope your's is a simple fix. Ours involved a file and a align bore.

Oh it's simple enough--Find the source of the leak and fix it--LOL. Yeah this sucks but it comes with the territory sometimes. I've had a pretty good run and I was due I guess. J.Rob

That stinks! But it is true transparent builds like this everyone appreciates. Even the best have issues now and then. Thanks for sharing EVERYTHING with us!!!! Hopefully it's a simple fix!

Well to tell the truth I was feeling kind of guilty with the prospect of fixing this "in secret" and claiming greatness. I figure I might as well come clean and share the whole process and I think the world could use some accountability right now. I've found the problem and will share the attempted repair. J.Rob

Think of it this way .... at least it happened before it was in the car .

The crack was found at the bottom of cylinder #3. I v'd it out, scored it with a rough stone and mixed up a very small batch of Belzona 1111. Pointed my heat gun at the crack for about an hour in an attempt to clean it and open it. Donned some gloves and worked the stuff into the crack. I love this stuff. J.Rob

Got it together this morning and put it through its paces all afternoon. Oddly enough it like 33 degrees total and I had to take a bunch of jet out. I did not have any time or desire to test spacers. I am just happy power is back going in the right direction and the oil is very very clean. Also as an added bonus- no leaks. J.Rob

very interesting. Is that a casting flaw or another ctack heading downward in the pic ?
Where does one buy the Belzona you used ? I have used the cement Belzona before with great success.

You can find them with a toggle search. I forget where exactly they are on Long Island NewYork but there here.

I ordered it directly from a supplier near Toronto. I can find my invoice on Monday and text you the info. All I remember is the price, very expensive but worth it. J.Rob
