Basic question but I'm installing a new steering box and coupler with the coupler rebuild kit. As far as driving the pins and installing the grease seal on the input shaft coupler, it seems it would be much easier with column on a workbench but I can't pull column because of linkage arm(no longer needed) hitting firewall. So how does one go about removing the arm so I can pull column? Or does it come out the other way? Here's a pic

Sure you can. You don't leave the separate plate in the car, holding the column. You unbolt those three bolts and now you have a HUGE hole to pull it out of

On some years, the rod into the arm is a "snap" fit into a grommet. You have to pry the rod out and the grommets get stiff over the years, "inflexible"

See that large oval hole in your firewall?

If you remove the column correctly, that arm has plenty of room to pass through with the rest of the column. :)

When I pull the column I pull it with the plate on the bottom attached to the bottom of the column Then there is plenty of room to get the column out see picture of a column removed.

The rubber seal can be worked over the cross pin. That pin is a very tight press fit. You can drive it out with enough hammer and effort but getting it centered with a hammer isn't easy. I dont change out that pin unless its well worn. Good luck with it.

Ok so I have a follow up question.. Im putting g the column back in car and found this spring laying in the floorboard. Must have fell down somewhere. Any ideas what its to?

probably can out of the slot the shifter arm on column is. if you think about it, when you pull shifter arm towards you, it will spring back towards the dash.
