I have until Carlisle next year to have my dart running driving and faster than my kid brother sega (hyundai) genesis.
My car is a beater 70 swinger with a stock magnum 5.9. Spitfire headers, chinese(assault racing) airgrap intake,750 edelbrock with a 727 and an Assault racing stall converter. 8 1/4 3.23 gears the car came in boxes with the Chinese stuff and my budget is non existent so I used it.
The Genesis is listed at 348 horsepower and 295 lbft torque. So I'm over 100 hp down with a 245 hp magnum.
Can this be done with a cam, valve spring package and home cylinder head porting on the stock shortblock?
Can I make up the rest with Nitrous without exploding this thing? It has to drive four hours both ways to race.
I have almost a year to get it done but not much cash due to a massive remodel.

This is my 2 cents: I would buy a Chinese turbo, do a Hangar18 mod to your carb, open the piston ring end gaps up and surprise the hell out of him. You will have to upgrade your fuel system too.

100 hp? leave everything alone and add a small nitrous kit. nice and reliable driving to the track, only any extra strain on it while racing and then drive home again. simple.
neil.

I'd go with nitrous as well, a 125 or 150 shot kit, sometimes, they pop up used, for a decent price. You'll have to add an electric fuel pump, and lines to supply the added fuel needed. For what it's worth, I wouldn't recommend driving the car you are racing, race, and drive home in it, as a sole means to get there and back. You might be best to rent a truck and trailer, be ause you just never know what could happen. Sure people do it, and you should be able to make an eight hour trip and have fun without a break down; but this will be racing. Expect the unexpected.

What is your budget?
Does it have to be N/A?

His car has every advantage except the amount of cylinders the engine has.
I’d never use anything “Assault.”

Have you raced him yet? Some of them loaded genesis can be well over 4000lbs. Perhaps look at power to rate ratio to see how you stack up?

I bet you could get a regrind HR cam and just tune it good and be right there. His biggest advantage is more gears in the trans. you may be short a bit on HP but you will have almost 400 torque.
Oh and make sure you have a sure grip and slicks as you will get hammered of the line.

You would be looking at buying heads, cam, intake, headers.

Mostly.. once you put a mech advance distributor on it... it's already gonna make 20 more. The things dont advance more than maybe 20 degrees I'm told. I should check myself.
So if it's a 240 hp motor.. it shouldn't hard to get 320 out of it with the cam, heads, headers. 90 hp or 70 after the timing is cranked up depending on how you look at it.

Or like the other say... do nothing and add a 75 or 100 shot of goofy gas

My buddy runs a stock 5.9 long block with a single plane intake, 750 dp and headers in a 67 valiant. Car has 4 speed and 3.91s with 26 in drag radials. Runs 13.1 to 13.2 in the 1/4. I bet that would do it.

I like being a copy cat sometimes…

Stock 5.9, M1 single plane, 750 cfm carb (Holley preferred) 1-3/4 headers, Comp Cams copy cat 380/360 crate engine cam that has more lift.
Add minor head work so the valve retainers clear the head. Give it a milling for a .5 increase in compression.

Change the stall on the converter to match the 4.30 gears and go clean his clock with an extra 100 shot of N02. You’ll clear 500 hp.

I think it needs to stay NA. It's going to be a driver and stone simple is the goal. I'm thinking I'd really like to stay under a grand to make this beat him

meh ,came with the car. My suspicion is one chinese knock off is probably not much different than another chinese knock off but I guess we will find out.

Do you have one of your brothers timeslips?

he never raced it.

His is a coupe which the all knowing Google puts at about 3800. If Google is correct my car is a few hundred lighter but I'm about a hundred pounds heavier than him soooo

Yeah, the deal is I have to drive it because his modern car is capable of driving and racing and driving home.

I picked up an unknown nitrous setup at the swap meet. If it works at all it will be installed but I want to be closer to beating him without it. I have an electric pump with a bypass regulator and 3/8 fuel lines i should be okay to supply the extra fuel from the other outlet on the regulator,

thanks, I hadn't thought of slicks. I have a sure grip.

4.30 gears and a big cam!

Yeah If i had an overdrive tranny I would go for a lot more gear for sure.

Yeah, except you’re talking about dropping 2-3000 dollars into it. He said he has no budget. I’d go with NO2.

The Kia Stinger lost to a gen 3 hemi charger R/T by about 2 lengths in a youtube video I watched 3 days ago. Those cars are pretty nice. AWD turbo V6s. May be the same Hyundai/Kia motor

If it’s a new G70 awd you will get roasted on the street… they run into the 12s on dirty pavement…you probably want to be running at least mid 12s to have him covered
