Hello guys,

I have a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback 318cui.
Unfortunately I have a problem with the fuel supply.
Under high acceleration the engine does not get enough fuel and shut of.
When I put in a new fuel filter it works fine but soon I can notice some brown substance in the filter which will clog it by time. I think the substance is rust particles.
So the problem I think is rust inside the gas tank.

I want to renew the whole system.

So on my list of new parts is:
- gas tank (Should be stainless steel I think?)
- filler neck (Should be stainless steel I think?)
- sending unit
- complete fuel line from tank to carburetor
- all accessories and small parts I also need for install

Currently I run a small Holley Mitghy Mite electric fuel pump without regulator.
Should I upgrade to something other or is it fine for my setup?

Can you suggest me good qulity parts and give me a list about all parts I will need?

Some information about my current engine setup:
318cui LA, stock except:
670 cfm Holley Street Avenger carburetor
Weiand Stealth aluminum intake manifold
MSD electric ignition system
Holley Mighty Mite electric fuel pump

I'm from Germany and it is my first classic American car.
So I'm kind of novice.
I don't want to forget to order something which I need and then notice it at the install.
So I want to make sure I order everything which is may needed.

Also important:
Currently my fuel gauge is not working at all.
So I also want to get that working and order all the necessary parts.

I attached some pictures.

Thank You!
Greetings from Germany

My observations from looking at the pics..

The tank is done, should be replaced. Spectra makes a factory original. Available at Nappa Auto parts.
Filler tube could probably be reused but you need to remove it and look at the portion that goes into the tank to see if it is rusted. Vans Auto carries new tubes. Also, the filler tube grommet at the end should be replaced. New sending units are available. Bouchillon Engineering sells a stainless steel version , I have one myself, works perfectly with the factory gauge and the sealing ring on the sending unit works fine. I've been using mine for 3 years with no problems.
You have a piece of rubber line in the gas line at the sending unit where you installed the electric fuel pump. That took away the ground path that the gas gauge needed to work properly. Quick test.. connect a jumper wire to the tank and the frame of the car. If the gas gauge starts working, that's where the problem is.

Hopefully others on here will add their observations as well.

BTW, how did your car get to Germany??

Nice Cuda!!

Cheers!!

Nice cuda I had a similar problem could never get the motor to run good so pulled all the mats out of the trunk and looked right down into the tank yikes top was almost gone from rust I went with a fuel cell mounted in spare tire hole

Brown substance- seems that there is dirt/debris in your tank. There is a filter also in the tank attached to the sending unit. While all your original components can be repaired and restored, for most it will be easier and cheaper to replace these with quality parts that are available. Your choice.

There's a stainless steel tank on eBay, same place where I bought mine.

eBay item number: 361612869018

I replaced the tank, sender, and lines on my 66. That was 10+ years ago and no fuel issues since.

I bought a fuel tank from Tanks.inc
for my 68 Barracuda. Very nice looking part, powder coated on the outside.
They have several options for an in tank electric fuel pump. I will add that their replacement fuel level gauge has the same common fuel level sensing error reported by others. Although I have not done it yet, correctable with an add on electronic gizmo.
Inline Tube is a source for stock replacement fuel lines.

Get your orginal sending unit reconditioned. Instrument Specialties is one place.
Inline tube for new fuel line.
Your choice for fuel tank from suggestions, I went stainless.
Mega Parts for the other little things.
New sending unit pick up filter/sock.

Thank you guys for your adivce!
I made me a part list. It will be well over 1.000$ until I have the stuff here in Germany. (with shipping, tax)

So I decided to remove the tank before I place the order and see what I really need. Maybe I don't need a new filler neck for example.

My question is how exactly is the filler neck attached to the tank?
Can I remove the tank without losen the filler neck?
Just unplug the lines and wires and remove the two metal straps which hold the tank and I'm done?
Can I simply pull the tank away from the filler neck?

BTW, how did your car get to Germany??

Nice Cuda!!

Thanks, it was imported to Germany from California. Ran the whole life in LA. I bought it from a classic car dealer who did the import.

You might want an extra pair of hands when you drop and install the tank. I would remove the screws that attach the filler neck to the 1/4 panel, I have a Dart, there is a rubber grommet in the tank that the filler neck goes through, there may be another one in the trunk floor. It's just all easier with a second pair of hands. Get the gas out of the tank, lay under the car and unhook the straps and drop it on your stomach. You will probably habe to wiggle the filler tube out. Get a sending unit lock ring wrench, they are cheap and make removing the lock ring much easier.
Parts-
Lock ring wrench
Tank, should come with new sender gasket and lock ring
Filler neck grommet for the tank
Gasket for filler neck at 1/4 panel
Maybe the trunk floor filler neck seal
New foam rubber cushion pad that goes between the tank and spare tire well
Ground strap from fuel line to sending unit
New fuel line
New sending unit sock/filter for the pick up tube
Replace filler neck?
The new replacement sending units are pretty much junk , their voltage rate is different than your orginal, that is why I recommend reconditioning your original sending unit.

Meanwhile I removed the gas tank. Was quite an easy job.
Only had to cut one of the J bolt because at some point I couldn't lose the screw nut anymore.

Well, what to say. It looks like sh** from the inside.
I think the tank was swapped once, it is not the original. Also the sender unit I think.

Looks like the aftermarket tank and sender unit were not the best quality.
The sender unit rusted up in the down position.

Don't even know what this black stuff is inside.

Here are some pics.

Someone mentioned Tanks Inc. which is a good choice. They will be able to supply and in tank fuel pump and they also have an electronic fuel level module. They have one that is the correct ohms for Chrysler if you go that direction. Tanks Inc also has traditional tanks.

In Germany.......remove that sender and soak it in vinegar as well as the filler tube for a day. They can be rebuilt for the price of a bobbin of sender wire. As for the tank: fill it with a kilo of rocks and strap it to a cement mixer, rotisserie or something that can turn it for an hour. Empty the rocks and rinse with diesel or old gas. It'll look new inside or will bust out of any rusted parts. For a grand, I'd try and clean that stuff first. I got a tank from AMD on closeout for $47 shipped for my 65 but I'm in USA. What kind if looks you get when your driving that thing in Germany? Super cool !

You may be right, not original sender, although it's bends are almost correct. Looks like it ate the plastic float. Try and get a brass float. Definitely time to replace it. Wondering where all of the crud came from. I am thinking that alchol gas back in the USA dissolved crud from old fuel tanks in CA. and it ended up in gas tanks.

That black stuff sir looks like someone's cheap way of fixing a tank leak. They poured a sealer of some sort into the tank and swirled it around to seal a leak. Unfortunately it was possibly also responsible for gumming up the sending unit as it should have been taken out first.

same issue

do you have a manufacturer and part # for the lock ring wrench ??? /fuel sock

Mega Parts carries the lock ring wrench and pick up sock. They're in WI.
