Hemi engine swap..is it worth it

-
if you are going to go carb no boost by the MSD hemi 6 to run ignition. for a carb what is your choice? what ever carb you like but i would lean to a holley with mechanical secondary's. that's just my preference. you could go proform as well. what every you are comfortable tuning. I would think no bigger than a 650 cfm, just my guess

Looked on MSD website why does it say the msd hemi 6 only works on years up to 2008. Is that because of the vvt..if I'm not using vvt it would plug in and work I assume. Not the best information on their part

Ahh like this?

Yes, because of the VVT. Can be used if you use the older cam and crank sensors and lock the VVT. I have that very thing in a Scamp right now.

No. Not the cam. Just the sensors to run the MSD. The sensors are cheap.

Well done some research to understand the VVT. Looks like I would need the Comp Cams phaser limiter it would allow up to a .619 valve lift per their website. Then I need to get non msd lifters with the block off plugs as well. Will the stock lifters be ok I have a new set on hand or do I need to break the bank and upgrade. Is a new stock timing ok as well and stock oil pump. As far as putting together the bottom end like a old school engine anything else to know. I guess I would need new main cap bolts and rods bolts. They are tty as well ? I would need cam and crank sensors from pre 09 engine correct. Thanks

Stick with the LA or Magnum engine, the money part is why I won’t change even though I have two 5.7 Hemis. You can drop 3-5 grand or more real easy installing one in the car. I don’t have that type of money laying around but you can do a Magnum for under a grand scrounging for parts (plenty out there).

Stock lifters will be fine. Stock timing set and tensioner and guides will be fine. Stock oil pump will be fine. Clearances are a little tighter than old school. Main and rod bolts are TTY. Available cheaply through a Chrysler dealer. Correct on the sensors.

Any of you guys that have commented on my post running a msd hemi 6 control box . If so what cam, intake and carb and you using. Are you happy with results and has tuning been hard or easy. Thanks

I have two of them. One is currently in a 73 Scamp, 5.7 Eagle with a 6.4 cam, Prefix/Arrow Cascar intake, 750DP carb. It runs well. Don't have any times with this combo. The other is a 6.1 based 426. Currently awaiting a new home. When it was in my 74 Swinger, it went low 10's. That cam is a Hughes 264/268 @ .050, 650ish lift, 1050 carb, Ritter 4150 Drag Pak intake.

Ok so the prefix intake stock not ported with stock eagle heads and msd hemi 6 . I was looking at comps stage 3 cam package. Yours runs well on the street..should have balls

Correct. Bone stock Eagle except for the 6.4 cam. No porting to intake, out of the box, on to the engine. It'll turn the tires when commanded.

Ok hoping to put one in my 70 Dart. Want to run a 3.55 gear and stall to match combo. I would think I should be easy sub 7.50 in the 1/8 mile. What's your hp guess on that combo 450 crank hp. The comp cam stage 3 cam says ads 86hp I'm assuming that's with FI and stock manifold..

The HP on my deal might be a little low, it's a 120,000 mile take out of a 2012 Durango. Not that it's dog tired, but, it ain't fresh either. I'd say a solid 400.

I'm pretty excited to do a hemi swap just waiting to see if my core is good. If so I'm going to basically do a stock rebuild with a healthy cam , intake and carb . Just hope it's worth it that's my worry. Since I'm not doing fuel injection it seems a lot of people are like why bother. It's still a modern engine even with a carb and well built. Also the cool factor of saying I have a hemi in my Dart. I have owned 3 6.4 hemi cars and they are a blast in a 4200 plus pound car. I figure this 5.7 should be close in power with my build and in a car that weighs 1 k less..be pretty fast car

I like that trailer you have. How did you do your trailer hitch by the way. Do you have a thread on it.
I do not have a thread on the "Cuda Tail". I built that thing back in 1998, I have old pics I could scan and tell of the build. The hitch is welded to the rear frame and the receiver is behind the tag, in the tire well is where the hitch pin goes in. I will take it to car shows unhook it, remove receiver, let tag down and watch people stand there and scratch their head wondering how it hooks to the car. I will say lift the tag and you see a square hole with a mopar pentastar and then they figure it out.

Did anyone need to cut any of the steering column that comes through firewall to make hemi fit. Seen someone who trimmed a bunch off their's . Its 70 dart. Just curious thanks

I relocated mine a couple of inches over away from motor just to give myself some space. It is very tight if you don’t. Since I was fabricating my own dash it was not an issue. I went with flaming river column as I also converted to coil overs with rack and pinion. Not the best picture but yes I relocated mine a bit. With regard to length I am not sure as I did not use OEM. I had to use two knuckles to get it lined up, and still not entirely satisfied with it. It is on my list for winter.
