So my next project for my 73 Valiant is to replace my whiplash 318 904 setup with a 9:1 or 10:1 360 build with a 727. The car will be a street car/daily (and by daily I mean I would drive it often as I don't care what gas costs as its all about the fun)

Im looking to see what components I should change to make it more durable, and withstand my severe lead foot. I would like to put a bigger pan, front trans cooler to help prolong fluid.

My current core, is from a 73-74 truck or van as it had the stubby tail housing for the 2 piece drive shaft. I have the correct housing and shaft to convert it to a passenger car trans. I took it apart today and I has 3 gear front and rear planets. Should I change these to 4 gear planets? I plan to use a B&M shift kit, along with a quality master kit either B&M or transGo. Any other suggestions would help out.
Thanks

You are'nt going to break planets on the street. If you decide to change them tho, just get a tougher one for the front, rear will be fine. Just make sure you get high quality friction material for the clutches and the bands, and get a solid kickdown band instead of a flex band. There are a lot of expensive mods, and the list can go on and on $$$, but a lot can be accomplished without them. My best advise is pick up the two current 727 (Torqueflite) rebuild and mod books by Tom Hand and Carl Monroe and decide for yourself. You won't regret that purchase.

Be sure to put some money into a GOOD torque converter that is just right for the combo you have. Rear gearing, tires, and the camshaft you choose will figure into that build.

Buy Tom hands book. I rebuilt mine first time with just his book and happy with the results. I’m not found of reading and following directions he’s got nice pictures for us special folk. LOL!!!

Why not hop up the 904? My buddy has a 67 cuda with a 360 he has been beating the piss out of for 20 years and just now has to rebuild the 904...

The book by Tom Hand our own @VOETOM is priceless when it comes to the Torqueflite. He really outdid himself. I highly recommend it.
