The 74 Scamp will soon face cleaning up the mechanicals, brakes, water pump, maybe filter/ fluid change AND DO SOMETHING with the carb

Minimum..........clean and kit, but these 74's have a habit of being pretty lean, some of the worst smog years

What is a viable "different carb" that is closest to "bolt on" IE does not require vast reworking of throttle and kick down?

I prefer not to spend a "tremendous" amount of money on this as I'm not sure yet where this is going....

Is there any dirty tricks to them? Like nylon parts that deteriorate, etc?

The last time I looked at one was over 20 years ago, so I can't remember. But I don't think so. AFAIR, there are only two rubberized internal parts; the viton-tipped float-valve and the accelerator pump. Some models had a non-metal pump-seal carrier mechanism. I don't know what it was exactly; nylon/plastic, but I have seen decades old ones still working, plus I think replacements come in the kits.
There mightabin a nylon bushing on the passenger side, maybe for the choke pull-off, I can't recall.
What I can recall is that the electric assist timers for the choke elements were a PITA. But they are just a bi-metal bar in a metal housing, that you can monkey with. Sometimes they come with a ballast that shuts them off if you leave the key on engine not running. Those sometimes burn out, and then the choke-plate won't relax to vertical.
That's all I got for ya.

If I had to I'll convert it to manual choke. I guess maybe I'll see if I can pick up a kit

I've been into many many carbs years ago, so "I ain't skeered" as Rusty would say

Probably an early 70s (like 70 or 71) Carter bbs.

Hard to beat Weber carbs for both performance & economy. You could try one of the six cylinder specialists such as Clifford performance. Also, RaceTep/Redline in Hollywood,Cal sell Webers & kits to install.
