Cc'ing a head tools?

I have a 50 cc barette, and the piece of lexan to cover the cylinder will be easy to get, mainly need something to hold the barette and cobble something to hold the head in position.
Jr college freshman chemistry was a LONG time ago, don't know anyone currently taking any such classes at the moment who could "borrow" the setup used there any more these days.
What do you guys have/use?
 
I went to the local farm supply store. They have all kinds of syringes for horses and cows. I got one that is 80CC with a needle. I used lexan, a square about 5" or so. I drilled a small, like 1/8" hole way off center, where the edge of the chamber would fall. I slobbered up the head with white grease, put the lexan in place, and filled the chamber with a 50/50 mix of water and rubbing alcohol till it was full. I kept the hole at the top of the uphill side of the head (which was not quite level) to let all the air out. It was easy-peasy and maybe $10 total investment.

50 cc. Syringe from a vet supply place, used, free.
1/4 clear plexi plate from scrap at work, free.
White grease off the shelf, free.
Pint of rubbing alcohol, $.99, used about a dimes worth.
Girlfriend's food coloring, free.
Could probably start over from nothing, and get it done for less than $20.

I bought a cheap 100cc ebay syringe, leveled the heads on my bench, then used a cd with a thin layer of grease around the edge and smashed it down over the chamber then filled the syringe to a even 90 ccs with rubbing alcohol and then squirted the alcohol in the center hole of the cd until it was completely full then subtracted the the remaining from 90. I have some pics somewhere. I'll try and find them

Nice job and good thinking. Just like the responses above, a little head use goes a long way if you know what your looking for! I did this very thing with a 60cc Syringe. Plexiglass and a dab of grease to seal it up.
 
Use a CD, vaseline and alcohol. level the head and fill it with a >80cc syringe and see when the meniscus comes to a head. See what you got left in the syringe. Getting the hole up to the top helps but I dont think by much doing it both ways. (.2cc if the CD hole gets filled)
 
I haven't heard the word meniscus in years, but I know exactly what you mean. I used a 100 cc burette and a big eye dropper. I start with 100 cc in the tube, and measure how many CC's I used to fill the leveled heads after spraying them with PAM. FWIW, my new TF190's are all right at 60 cc's. My stroker lives on.
 
100 cc burette .2cc graduations, clear plexiglass cover with a chamfered hole, grease to seal the plate, kerosene with a little ATF for color.

A lil grease, and some bolts. Drill the plexiglass I'd recommend setting up something where you can make sure the head is level all the way across and from side to side. Dam . A day late and a dollar short. My story....
 
I wasn't paying $50-100 or even more for a 100 cc barette, all I could find were that crazy priced. for something I might never use again, just to satisfy a curiousity, and since I'm shooting for ~48 cc chambers with the head shave/// I'm hoping this $20-some, 50 cc version will be sufficient.
I didn't think about the idea of using something like a syringe from the farm dept from the local TSC or farm and fleet.

I used my burette all the time, but if the graduations on the syringe are fine enough for you, I don't see why a syringe would not work. We take things too far most of the time anyway.
 
When i do a big block chevy head, i have to fill the syringe three times. You dont need a burette big enough to do it in one fill. I can get accuracy within one cc, which is close enough for my needs. I just really need to know if the head is as advertised (906s really about 10cc bigger than claimed) or if it has been shaved to less than stock.
 
Don't want to hi-jack. Can someone point me to a "how to" on cc'ing a cylinder?
Im assuming you want to determine dome or dish volume?
Depending on dome height, put the piston down in the hole a fixed amount, set with a dial indicator. (1/4", 1/2", whatever gets the dome below the deck. )
Seal the rings with some grease (that volume can be calculated, if neccessary ). Calculate the volume of the cylinder as if it were a flattop with no reliefs, then cc your cylinder as if it were a cyl head, and compare volumes.
And im betting there is a video on you tube, somewhere.
 
Cylinder volume. My pistons are dished (factory replacement 360). What liquid to use to prevent rust. Do I need to seal rings with something? Grease?
