Fuel pressure problem..I'm at a loss.

There just wasn't enough fuel volume with the Edelbrock mechanical pump for the "stock 383" and a 200 shot. I know...you don't have to say it.

This project wasn't going to get out of control...and then it did!
OK, I wont say it

New regulator is on and return line hooked up. It seems to be much better but, maybe not all the way fixed. I noticed I do have a fuel leak coming from the carb so, I will pick up a kit and hopefully it will be all good.

You get that fuel filter apart yet?

I don’t think the fuel pump is able to keep up to the demands of the motor. What size are your lines. Kim
3/8 inlet and 1/4 return. I found an article that talks about pumps and how to judge what your motor would need. It said the general rule of thumb is to take your GPH and times it by 10 and that would be how many horsepower the pump would support. The current pump is rated at 125 gph so, theoretically it would support 1250 hp...seems like a stretch to me but, at 125 gph I would think it would keep up with the demand I'm putting on it.

And that fact is proven earlier in the thread where you said you can stand on it for any length of time and it won’t act up. It’s only after a WOT run that it shuts down.

Kim, read the entire thread. All of your questions have already been answered.
The problem is not the pump.

125 gph should theoretically support 1200 hp in a perfect world in an NA carbureted engine. But things are never perfect. There are also some efficiency factors that come in to play. BSFC is used to calculate the needed fuel volume and that can vary a little depending on which calculator you use.

Well...a little update. It's fixed!!! Don't ask me exactly what cured it as I have done a lot. I will say the filter was very suspect...

What filter did you get to replace the Earls?

The local speed shop only had an Edelbrock high flow filter. I also put a kit in the carb tonight as it had started to leak out of the metering block gasket.

I also want to add that I had a really short element in my air cleaner as in the spring I put a phenolic spacer under the carb. I measured this out and I believe there was only about 1/4" of room between the vents on the carb and, the air cleaner lid. Long story short I was able to get a taller element to fit under the hood and, that gave me more clearance between the carb vents and the lid and, I'm sure that helped also.

Use a loosely packed aluminum foil ball to gauge your hood to air cleaner gap.

I fought a similar issue for a year. I feel your pain. I found the flare on the vent tube closed the tube down to less than 1/16” among other things. Finally put a holly red pump at the tank and a big mechanical up front. The red also makes starting it nice after the fuel evaporates out of the carb when the car sits. Rock steady 5 lbs.

This car hasn't been happier.....and......that makes me happy!!!
