Tranny fluid smells

So, I was changing my torque converter, and I noticed that the fluid smelled burnt. Not many miles on this trans. Maybe 1000.
I know I have to change the fluid, and to check the band adjustment.
My questions are what could cause the fluid to burn in such a short time? I drive like an old man.
What do I need to do now to prevent any issues? Car currently drives fine.

Are the bands adjusted correctly? Depending on the rebuild, there may be some slippage as it breaks in (also dependent upon whom rebuilt it), and, especially if using a synthetic fluid, may be completely normal. Many synthetics have that type of smell to them, which is why the old nostrilmeter isn't as good of a tool anymore.
 
Bands are 2 turns out. As noted by the builder on the side of the case.
It did take some work to sort out the throttle pressure. Wonder if that's a contributor?
 
First and foremost stop driving it like an old man! LOL.. a burn off a day keeps the mechanic away...:thumbsup:....
That smell is clutch dust mixed into your fluid... Slipping clutch...
 
It's better to have it shift hard and work your way down then have it shift soft and work your way up..
 
So. I had type F in it. Stay with that, or go to dexron/mercron? What about synthetic?
Is 2 turns out on the bands too much?
 
Type F is not what was factory recommended, but people have run it for decades. It will work fine. Although I prefer using Dexron, look elsewhere for your trouble if you have one, the fluid ain't it.
 
I use the cheap dexron from Walmart...
I always put a small shift kit in at the very least when I do a transmission rebuild...
I want those clutches engaging not slipping.. not banging just engaging...

I put in a God Forbid tci valve body. It didn't function properly, so I pulled it apart, and went through it with their directions.
Shifts are good , kickdown works properly.
Should I back off adjustment to 2 1/2 turns?

My plan is to drop the pan, and look for metal, then refill with dexron/mercon.
 
Dexron is what it was made for. Type F is supposed to give you firmer shifts (Same as B&M fluid) as the friction modifier are different, more grab but stay with the Dexron. Type F is ancient tech and has the lowest temperature rating, sheer rating... (IIRC its the lowest of everything across the board). Dex has better chemistry, Dex2 was the original fill. Mopar's ATF+3 is backwards compatible and the newer ATF+4 is all synthetic and is more expensive. If you have a lock up convertor, it will work best with what is called out in the service manual. I think Type F is not good for a lock up convertor.
 
Burnt fluid is clutches &/or bands slipping. You can either pull it apart now to fix it, or put more fluid in & wait until it does more damage...

Do not agree that synthetic fluids have a burnt smell to them. I have been using syn for 20 yrs, went 15 yrs without a change of fluid or filter, no smell because nothing was burnt. Only changed the fluid because I was fitting a man VB, could used the old fluid.
 
Truthfully all out trannies ever need is regular Dexron. All the other fancy fluids sound cool and have lots of additives. Our trannies just don’t need or benefit from the hoopla. Sure the sky is the limit. Buy what u feel is right. Kim

Much like engine oil. Everybody makes a big deal out of it but for the most part, all our old engines give a damn about is the dipstick reading full. lol
 
It has a 2.9 lever, so I did 2 1/2 turns out.
Oddly, the fluid smelled fine after I drained it, and smelled it, so I guess it will be ok.
