Lou Madsen and I were out there that year to give moral support to Bob Dally, the guy with the 66 Barracuda.
He threw a connecting rod out the side of the 170 slant.
Not at the crank, but at the wrist pin on his first or second run.
I have never seen the little end break like that on a slant.
Bob was listening to some Bonneville Svengali on speed secrets and it went south in a big way.
As far as I know he has never been back since and the car has been sold.

Bucket list place for any gear head, glad I went.

I'm thinkin' a trip to El Mirage Dry Lake in the fall. More SCTA territory there. My old man was a participant in his youth out there in a sectioned Model A with a flathead . I lived 45 minutes away from El Mirage for all of my teen age years and my early 20s. As many trips we made over the hill to the drags, we never cut our travel time in half to go to El Mirage .
