I'm a machinist and our shop threw out a big bad azz industrial 30" pedestal fan.....it "stopped working".
Filthy dirty, greasy, oily, gross.
I took it home and took it apart, pressure washed it and took the motor to my vacuum repair guy.
Bad switch...lol - $40 bucks! These things are hundreds of dollars new!

Painted it, put it back together and that sucker moves some serious air! Awesome garage fan now!

We live in a throw-away world. ...a little sweat-equity and one man's trash is another man's treasure!

Yeah that's a bad boy right there now!

Yep. We've gotten several "new" washers and dryers for free because they quit.

The dryers are usually just a bad heat sensor, it's a $15 part and about 20 minutes worth of work to diagnose and replace.

Zip tie a wet towel to the front of it for a swamp cooler effect.

One day I came home to a very similar story from a good friend of mine saying here! Take this! Same can you got there. It’s like a mini hurricane in my garage.

The company i work with has an account they throw out so much new stuff. That’s its insane. Big ticket items. The top if this thread I’ve been saying that for years.

Great score!! And a great looking fan!! I had something like that happen where I work. A big 5 foot box fan the motor went out. Brushless AC motor. Only thing that goes wrong on those is bearings. They were gonna scrap it. They did not want to redo the motor or replace the motor. I loaded it up and took it home. $13 worth of bearings off evilbay, and a new motor pulley and I was in business. Motor was jammed full of dirt and paint shop dust. Pic of it running was before I put the screen back on. This is a perfect fan to keep in the doorway of the shop to suck out paint fumes.

or blow out mosquitoes !

Numerous power tools recovered from the rock farm. According to MSHA or Osha any issue with the power cord was a citation.
Little melty spot from a welding booger, crack in the insulation, God forbid a missing U Ground on the plug  and "Junk it! Cut the cord off and trash it!"

Put a new cord on it.

I scored a fan just like OP's from a local university. OP scored big, those fans are great because they'll cool you when you're standing.

When I see tossed residential furnaces, I grab those squirrel cage fans. NOTHING moves more air for the size, and they're great if you're in a hot garage under a car, because the dirt that falls doesn't land on you, it blows away. Tilt em back a little and they'll blow a ton of air up your shorts, which has multiple benefits. Wire em up right, and you can even select speeds on some of em.
