So I have a 383 that I recently bought out that was in a 69 super bee but wasn't matching numbers so he completely rebuilt it and put a stock 440 cam and I got it for my 76 Duster but I was wanting to put a different cam in it im only 20 and got no clue on this subject but my dad has a 68 dart with a 318 and it has a deep throaty sound and we say ''it hits a lick'' nut i wanting something mean and agressivly thumping ... just trying to explain the best that I could think

The Whiplash cam is a great cam for a stock engine, stock convertor and rear gears.
it will create good vacuum and maintain cylinder pressure providing good torque for the street.
if you want a nasty sounding idle and drivability, I think it's the best cam out there for a stock drivetrain.

7D6,

As we were talking in the other thread you have about swapping. It is necessary to know what you want out of your car. What do you want to do with it? Are you looking to tip stop light to stop light? 1/4 or 1/8 mile? Road racing, auto cross? Or figure 8’s down at the local dirt track? Once you figure out which way your going to build / prep your car, you start picking items for that build direction.

You know you asked a super loaded question as to what cam your should run... Everyone here will tell you something different for selection.

This is the info you should post and will be asked by a cam company tech when trying to decide on cam.

Motor - 383 standard, bored, stroked?
Heads- stock, ported, Alloy?
Intake- whatcha got?
RPM Range
Transmission- auto 727,904 or 4 speed?
Axle, gears?
Car weight?
Wheel and tire height?

Torque converter selection will be impacted by your cam selection.

As you can see, cam selection is based on looking at the whole packaged you want and not just a choppy idle sound...

Howard’s Cams
Hughes
Billet
Oregon Cams
Lunati

Be careful with too much cam duration. It'll sound throaty but will not make much low end torque. 65'

The Hughes Whiplash was designed for a stock low compression 383, it's works with the whole stock package gear, convertor, etc
You don't need to worry about all the typical BS when choosing a cam.

There’s no doubt. The kid is young, teach him the typical cam selection BS so he knows why such cam was selected. That is if he wants to learn it of not...

He's still gotta get the 383 swapped. truth be known if the cam he has is the roadrunner cam, that's all it needs.

If it is a 69 Super Bee 383, leave it as is. They were great motors able to do it all. It is not low compression, forged crank, 906 heads, AVS carb capable of low 13 sec 1/4 times in a B Body.

I agree, but he say's it is rebuilt. so it's probably lower compression than the factory probably closer to 8-8.5 to 1 now.

Hughes Whiplash

I dont know if the Hughes Whiplash is really the cam for you or not.... but just for fun look it up on Youtube.... there are several videos of peeps running them and they do sound bada** if nothing else.

Yall, we all put large by huge cams in 7.5:1 motors and had a lotta fun. Let him do one. It'll be cool. Might not pull a greasy string outta a cat's ***, but it'll be cool and he'll learn somethin. Just like we all did.

Hey Rusty I like that one...Pops used to say wet noodle out a cat's ***....I asked him if his 4wheel drive will pull...he said it will pull the shortening out of biscuits

Comp Cams 21-406-5, it's a special order shelf cam. It used to be a stocking cam, the "275DEH" and it is the meanest sounding daily-driver B-motor cam with the broadest power band that I'm aware of. Easy on springs (use Comp #911s) and works with stock rockers. Use a stock 11" converter and hopefully 3.23+ gears. Doesn't have to have headers but will work with them as well. Wicked idle but pretty good vacuum and throttle response.

That's a goodun.
