Take a 68 318 with about a zero deck height....~210HP. Put in a 340's cam, 4bbl cop intake....compare that to a equal compression 72 340. Check out this crude "road simulation" dyno result from the Mopar family. 5HP? I think Ehrenberg passed out seeing this.
