Can I make a lock 904 out of a non lockup 904 if I have everything to do it from the lockup transmission?

If you could find the slant to LA 904/727 adapter, you could source the much more common V8 lockup 904.

Those light trucks might be a source, many of those has slants and 904's in the 80's

I was under the impression that the difference between lockup and non lockup is valve body, input shaft, converter. How are the cases different? Seems if you had the parts from a lockup v8 they’d swap in to a slant case. @transman ?

The lockup has a like 5/8" smooth button on the end of the input shaft, whereas the non lockup is splined all the way to the end.

I don't know WTF I'm thinkin. A lockup transmission ain't gonna get me anymore than 1:1 and I have that RIGHT NOW with a three speed. lol

42RH? Isn’t that the non electric over drive 904?

No you have a 1:1 ratio in the trans and some converter slip. The lock up will knock off 200-300 rpm by eliminating the slip. So the ratio won’t change but the rpm drop in lockup is a big plus.

I know, the converter slip means it's not 1:1. With lockup it is, so I will gain nothing over high gear in a three speed manual. Right?

Wow one word makes so much difference. “Manual”. I completely breezed right through that one. Well we know who the dummy is.

In that case I’d build an adapter plate and stuff a t5 behind it.

@lkopaska built a lock up for his 67 convert. It has to help but for sure not as much as a overdrive.

And I HAVE a world class T5. Don't tempt me.

Geez rusty what you need is an A833 OD!!!!!

..........Which brings me to...........

I'm not terribly familiar with the development of 3 speed bells over the years. "Why can't" you modify the bell/ add a say 1/4 or 5/16 plate as a base to modify the 4 speed bolt pattern? I'm guessing you'd need to enlarge the center hole, which I did on a 340 bell AKA paid a guy with a big lathe!! (18 spline box into a 340)

THEN you could fiddle with the column linkage to shift the 4 forward gears LOL and put an extra lever to operate reverse!!!

1,2,3 shift then lockup will drop the rpm another 200ish rpm. When you drive one it feels like an auto 4 speed.
