318 edelbrock intake install ( round two)

-
I only use the cork china wall gaskets as templates to cut some out of thinner gasket material. And I never use the steel gaskets, Couple of daps of silicon in the corners. 65'

Without gaskets, lay the intake in place, use a magic maker and trace the ends of the intake on your china walls. Give a bit of a road map.

Also look how the bottom of your intake is machined. The pass front area can be a problem area as well as the sealing surface sometimes cuts back from the actual edge. Make sure you get coverage where is actually seals.

As you found out, don't leave RTV in the sun.
Thanks cracked back. Good idea tracing out the intake. I’ll be sure to do that. I can raid the kids market stash haha.

Helps to set the intake down on to the engine slowly with a cherry picker or over head hoist so you can carefully set it on straight and square.

An experienced 2nd set of hands can help guide it down into position too.

These Felpro 1243 intake gaskets fit up to the 318 head ports size nicely too.

Disregard the cork gaskets for the china wall and use the Black Gasket Maker.

Thanks man I’ll see if the parts store can get a set for me. The edelbrock ones were so thick it was pushing the intake agains the valve covers. Thanks for the jfk and part numbers.

Thanks Plymouth. I have 2 sets of the metal ones but those will be going out the back door it sounds like. Much rather put good parts in and do it one time. Thanks man.

I have had to get them off ebay from various sellers, 1243 Felpro:

Engine Intake Manifold Gasket Set Fel-Pro 1243 eBay.png

There are 4 small plastic inserts that hold the 1243 Felpro gaskets in place that are kind of hard to find, maybe some plastic plugs from your hardware store that you cut the bottoms off. Will get you some pictures of these guide inserts. then you put the Felpros in dry except for the china wall corners and maybe a thin layer RTV around Water Ports if there is a little corrosion there.

These Felpro 1243 block off the heat riser ports on the heads which I like.

__________

This is where the plastic line-up sleeves go to hold the gaskets in proper place, then bolt the manifold on with them in there.

Plastic line-up sleeves are very thin and intake bolts need to be able to pass through them.

Like I say they are hard to find, I buy another different style 318 gasket set for 20 bucks on Ebay that has them included. But still use them with the special Felpro 1243 gaskets.

They come in the other Felpro MS90109 gasket sets.

Don't know if you've already torn this back apart or not. I had the same problem with the Performer I installed on my 318. In hindsight, I'm sure I didn't lay a heavy enough bead on the China walls. I was able to get mine to stop leaking out the back by pulling the distributor, cleaning very well with brake clean, and then laying a "fillet" of black rtv and working it under the back edge of the intake with a finger. 600 miles later, no leaks so far. May not be the right way, but I had no coolant leaks and really didn't want to have to start over. Just food for thought.

That’s pretty cool. I ordered the gasket this morning for oriliey but can swing by the hardware store to see if they have those plugs. Those would be cool to try.

Hey 73dust. I did try to lay in some more rtv but it didn’t help. I am not looking forward to do this intake again. Hopefully it will be finished up sometime this week. The parts store said the gaskets won’t be here till Tuesday. Thanks for the thought 73.

Awesome. Still not looking forward to it but feeling better that I did everything correctly, just jacked up the rtv by not putting enough in. Thanks for the help guys. And thanks for the rag tip 67. Appreciate you guys.
And don't forget to pull the rag out before setting the intake onto the heads. I have seen that happen a half dozen times. Not good.

are you sure its the intake gasket and not the oil pressure sender or line/fitting?
That's a good thing to check first. Also, if you're not leaking coolant or vacuum, I've been able to seal oil leaks without taking the intake back off. I spray the leak area real good with carb or brake cleaner, then work some RTV black over the seam and let it set. Once it's cured, fire it up and see if it's sealed now.

I found those little plastic things and they were great. Wish they came in all gasket sets, but they definitely helped a lot. Thanks for the info on them. I wouldn’t have know what they were for even if I had seen them before haha.

set the intake on dry, then look at how much gap there is to determine the size of the rtv bead you lay down...you may need a 5/16 or 3/8 inch bead of rtv...

You need light RTV on both sides of the Intake gaskets around the water ports

I've NEVER used rtv by itself on the ends of an intake. Always use the included cork gaskets and a bead of rtv in the corners. If there's a cut gasket available I use it. Even on something like a cover for a rear end.

The problem with cork is.....it is cork. Henry Ford used it over 100 yrs ago. We have better things now.
The cork will shrink & go hard from the heat....& leak. I would use a thick bead of silicon & it will be there forever......or until you want to remove it.

Cork can "suck in" also I don't know it that's what actually happens but yes it will look like it fell into the lifter valley side and leak, yes correct on the rtv around the water ports, dont need anti freeze leaking into the oil wiping out the bearings...

Thanks man I’ll see if the parts store can get a set for me. The edelbrock ones were so thick it was pushing the intake agains the valve covers. Thanks for the jfk and part numbers.
U can’t just plop the intake down with the valve covers in place. It’s not a Chevy. Kim

Yeah found that out haha. I know for next time ( either another upgrade or next car fr my daughter). She’s 6 and says she wants a dart panted B5 or plumb crazy. Looking forward to that project.

I think I’m good. Had it on a week. Only thing leaking are valve covers but think I have those fixed up now. I don’t ever wanna do that mess again so much easier outside the car lol.
Believe me there are much worse ones to have to do an intake on in the car.... Small block Mopar are among the easier ones that I have had to do
