Hi all,
Found this little guy, in my back yard, he and/or his brother have been hanging around for a month or two.

One that I saw had yellow on its belly and MIGHT be a Yellow Bellied Racer, he looked more like this, but about the same size as the one in my pictures.

He/she isn't venomous, & they eat the venomous snakes also. WIN WIN!!!

Ex wife was weeding flower beds one weekend and I came out of the Garage and saw a damn snake in a million pieces. I am like WTH. All snakes died in her eyes. It was a Garter snake.....

I shook my head on that one as we had built our house on a Copperhead den (or so Game and inland fisheries thought) so seeing other snakes was a good thing. Side note is we ended up with a Owls that summer and just like they said the problem went away....

Your safe OP but those Black racers have a mind of their own and are set in their ways. They will chase you if they feel threatened and don't have a way out lol...

On copperheads, we have a couple around our place. My wife looked up how dangerous they are and found the last medically reported copperhead snake bite in the State of New Jersey was 1952. Copperheads will avoid conflict at all cost and bite only as a LAST resort. Like a doberman or pit bull, they can kill you, but the don't. I actually talk to and hang out with them; even fed one a small fish once. (Pic is of 2 garters that live under out porch.) I did relocate a rather large copperhead from living in our cellar to across the lake once. Was too occupied to get pictures.

We had about a 4' Blacksnake that would show up at my place of work and just kind of hang out near an area I frequent. It was no secret that he was over there and to my surprise nobody was ready to chop it up into little bitty pieces lol... That's rare since it not hard to find people who say a good snake is a dead snake lol....

I have one in the back shop now I am sure. Let him do his thing and i'll do mine...

I have a very large pair of Black King snakes here on the hill in northeast Arkansas, I have live here 16 years and had a couple ground rattlers show up the first year I built the house, killed them , I had a tea cup Malltez and I didn't take any chances, but for the last 12 years or so I have not seen anything poisonous, I need to get some new Pictures of the pair here, we see them often, taking baby birds and eggs, these Kings mate for life, one here is nearing 5 ft long and show there self often, I could look in my video file.
Snakes are our friends, I just let the Kings take care of the poisonous snakes.

We have a bunch of outside "barn cats", they are death on any snake good or bad. The last snakes I seen they killed were small ish Copperheads, 1 Coral snake, ( They are always little) and one baby Timber rattler. They get our good snakes too but it is what it is.

Which one is the king and which one is the poisonous snake?

I would have been a rock star in my early years, but...I can not sing!!! and only know 4 chords!!
Thsts why I was/am a drummer, just a couple SRV songs in me, but the bassist and I keep it groovy.
Isn't that the definition of a rock star?
well, I have to say no, most rock stars can put out some great Blues and country songs :usflag:

Yep those snakes are good ones, keep small bug pest population down. Pretty too!
Rattlers I'd watch out for, free tip, a good snake catcher is usually the guy or gal who is still breathing lol

It's cool you appreciate the snakes. Just south of you in New Mexico I have learned to relocate rattle snakes. Many Navajo believe it's bad luck to kill them. Let's just say I used to kill them but needed some better luck, LOL!

I wouldn't call myself a snake wrangler, but I wouldn't be afraid to do it. I know a good bit about them and like all of them, even the venomous ones. They all have their place. I've actually have a couple of local DNR friends call and send pictures from time to time wanting to know what a particular snake is.

Not too long ago, I walked out and there was one in the front yard. It scared Kitty because she walked up on it and startled it. It raised its head and blew its head all up and looked just like a little cobra. I just reached down and grabbed it and told her "if it was a cobra, you'd be bit already". It was an Eastern Hognose Snake. That's one of their defenses is to look like a venomous snake. The other defense is playing dead. I took him over to the edge of the woods and let him go.

We've had lots of visitors through the years. Timber Rattlesnakes, King Snakes, Corn Snakes, Hognose Snakes, but I think my favorite is the Easter Indigo Snake. I've actually relocated several of those through the years from other peoples' property and brought them here. That's probably why we haven't seen any venomous snakes in years, because they are immune to and eat every venomous snake in North America. I've turned loose at least 8 since we've been here.

Indigo are definitely a bad *** snake

Back when I was a kid of about 13-14 I loved lizards, turtles and somewhat snakes. I could tell at a glance what it as. Back in SW Ga snakes were pretty thick. I hunted the rattlers and wadded the creeks shooting cottonmouths off the banks and limbs with the 22 before they hit the water. I liked the adrenaline rush. I was told that they will not bite you in the water. Then a kid got bit on his big toe while swimming in the creek! Guess they will!
Then I got a little older and found climbing on a colt gave a bigger rush.
