I had not "really" driven the 74 Scamp before the roof was replaced. Last summer I got it running and moving and maybe ? 5 ? miles around town or something.

Moved it a few times. It didn't idle quite right and then 't other day I drained sour gas out of tank, replaced hoses at tank and pump and had it fired up and it suddenly "wanted" to load up. "I thought" needle/ seat? Power piston stuck? and could not keep it running long enough to see for sure down the throat of the carb

So I cleaned the carb and figured if it improved, maybe I'll get a kit for it, if not I'll find a different carb. By the way if frickin HATE these damned 1945 Holleys

Put the carb on, it did not really want to run. I looked down the throat to see if accel pump was doing anything, and there was a "mess" shining in the bottom.........Where? is THAT coming from?

So I'm jumpering the start relay with a screwdriver, trying to hold the choke open and the throttle with the other, and trying to see down the throat. Does not "seem" to be much happening

AND THEN I SEE SOMETHING OUT OF THE CORNER OF MY EYE

I had the top breather hose off the air filter, hanging down over the side of the engine AND IT'S PUMPING BLACK LIQUID CRAP ALL OVER THE VR AND FENDER!!!!

So HERE is what happened:

At some point the fuel pump ruptured, and it finally got enough fuel into the oil that it was pulling a mix of oil/ gas (somewhere around 50-50!!!) into the PCV and down the manifold. Also it was pumping/ sloshing oil all up against the pistons and likely being sucked past the rings. The engine acted like it was severely flooding

When I drained the oil I recovered somewhere around THREE AND A HALF gallons of roughly half fuel/ half gas!!!

I JUST NOW came in near dark after getting it running and warmed up hell it sounds like a "brand new car"

Well at least the engine's clean on the inside. LOL

And with all that fuel in the oil it will be the cleanest engine in the world.

You have the shiniest pistons of any slant six around now!

Everytime I think it's the carb, or someone says "just needs carb adjusted", I tell myself "it's never the carb". LOL

Amazing it didn't blow every seal out of the thing or worse. Even more amazing that it took so "little" to make it run perfect again!

Reminds me of my tractor last year. Leaks hydraulic regularly, yet the level was always near full... But couldn't keep motor oil in the 3 cyl diesel. Long story short, now I know my hydraulic fluid shouldn't look like the motor oil (and the hydraulic pump now works tons better).

I ran out of time tonight. Only thing in the interior is the bench seat. Tomorrow I'll re-install the interior rear view and go for a short drive. I think the master cylinder is next

I've seen several Ford 302 with the crankcase full of fuel. I forget the exact numbers but at least 4 of those with more that 80K miles on them came apart a short time later. The bearings get washed too clean. Good luck with it.

Well I got it out on the road ran up the freeway a few miles to the car wash. Doesn't drive "terrible" I won't say it's great

AND THE WINDOWS LEAK like a screen door on a submarine

AND THE BACK WINDOW the "glass man" "fixed" for the 3rd? 4th? time still leaks. By rights I should take it back, but I'm just gonna eat it. I may make them take it out and then take it somewhere else. But they could break the window. So maybe "I" better take it out, get another new gasket, and find someone else. I am done with those hacks. Cost me 300? or was it 350? for both front and rear, so that's 150 down the God Damn tubes
