Christ what a POS to work on. I REALLY pulled it out of my as---I mean power valve piston a bit ago. Starting to get that Holley "one" together and could not find the spring/ needle out of the power valve. It was lyin right there on the floor of the shed, an absolute miracle I found it. I'd had it in a strainer and it "jumped" out somehow.

Biggest issue for me is the 12 finger top of the carb install trying to juggle the accel pump linkage. But the power valve in my opinion is a really poor design. Mostly the staked in place piston, which is subject to carbon/ junk / gum/ sticking

"Holley" There's your problem. :lol::mob:

Well LOL today's "end of work" did not go well

I had not driven this much, only 1 day a few miles back before I got the roof fixed. But we started it and "moobed it" (as they say on "Bait Car" ya know........) a few times

The other day it was seemingly flooding. So I yanked the carb and cleaned it, then went down to Oh'Really's

So here is this new girl, a redhead, but she is new. Told her "I want a metal Wix 5/16 fuel filter, I think it's a 33032"

So she types something in and says "it's not a good number" Then she turns to her buddy and he and her are bla bla bla and something about "tripple o -2" and pretty soon she comes out with a Microguard and it's a metal 5/16 and it says on the box .............33032!!!!

So I go home with oil (cause I have no history on the car) and put the filter on and try and start it. Before long I have a screwdriver holding the choke open, and then throw some down the throat and it fires, but it sounds.................ick.............

And I see something.........and I look over there........and it's PUMPING ALL KINDS OF BLACK LIQUID OUT OF THE VALVE COVER BREATHER. ****!!! Looks like bilge pump when the boat's sinkin!!!!

So I came in. My guess? Crankcase full of fuel

I'd have thought the gasoline smell would be overpowering at that point? Could there be a stuck/broken ring that is allowing blowby to pressurize the crankcase?

Bear in mind the car has not been really driven or even warmed up all that much. I guess sitting there it evaporated. No it doesn't seem to blow much oil and the compression is perfect across all 6

I slept late today. Alarm at 6, I'm eating breakfast at 945 LOL

WHY I REALLY REALLY REALLY HATE 1945 Holleys!!!

I guess the "one big thing" comes down to the accel pump link and the power valve

Power valve...........this is kinda like Rochester, it's a piece looks like a big tall jet only with a spring loaded needle in the middle. You have to CAREFULLY depress the needle to get a PROPER screwdriver in the slot and remove the valve/ needle/ spring

The piston is in the top cover of the carb. So the VACUUM PORT goes through a hole in the bowl gasket, and that can get effed up as you all know. The piston has a retainer which is STAKED in place, so that's a PITA, 'specially if you thought you were gonna "tune" anything That whole power piston is subject to goo, gum, varnish, carbon, and generally sticking.

The BIG PITA is getting it together:

The LINK for the accel pump has no retainer, rather it's retained by the "Chinese puzzle" in the way that it's bent. So you must have 8 hands and 6 eyes to twist this link into where it goes while fighting:

The strong throttle spring on the throttle shaft
The link itself
Not damaging the main well bleed tube which is delicate
The power piston stem which is delicate
The pump cup for the accel pump

Then when you finally get the top cover pointed down and headed for home you are STILL fighting most of the same problems, not bending the bleed tube, not damaging the power piston, and trying to guide the accel pump cup into the pump well.

I guess I'm getting old. I've been into lots of Holley 2, 4bbls, lots of Rochester 2bbls and QJ's and quite a few Carters. I do not EVER remember a carb that is such a POS to get together

LOLOL

In fairness I doubt he's running a 1945

Can you imagine how fast he would have been if he had put all that work into a real engine?

LOL Faster'n anything I got right now..............

You need a Carter bbs. I may have an extra core if you want it. I'll have to dig.

Regarding the power valve on 1945s (and other carbs): I ground a small notch out of a big, cheap screwdriver to remove those; that way, you don't have to worry about damaging them.

I've settled down a little LOL. So long as I don't have to do this 3 or 5 or 11 times.......................
