Looks like it housed a APU of some sort. Auxiliary power unit...
 
Prob a gen set driven of the front of the crank.
I think stretching the chassis, side saddle it, cover it and use a trans mounted PTO

But... not mine so ... to eaches peaches
 
Not the same truck. first truck is a two axle, the second is a three axle....
 
I think I posted some years ago, don't remember who, where, when. "Some guy" who was a heavy over the road trucker built a DIY dual engine truck tractor, seems to me it was gas. It was kinda two completely independent engine/ trans/ rear axles, complete with TWO shifters and TWO clutch pedals. I cannot find anything on it anymore. I was for sale I think on C/L
 
I drove for a guy in the 70's that converted a 4 cyl. Jimmy Bubblenose to a 6 cylinder Detroit and he added about four feet of hood to the truck.

He called it a PeterJimmy....
