Hey everyone , just got my dart a couple months ago and I found this site . Figured I should join cause I don’t know a whole lot about cars and I’m gonna be asking lots of questions . I’m pretty mechanically inclined so I know I can figure stuff out if someone explains it . Basically the thing will idle really nice I get compliments on how good it sounds when I’m starting it up but when i put her in drive she’ll go for about 500 feet and then slow way down like it’s about to die and eventually sputter out. I have replaced the carburetor, air filter, fuel pump, fuel filter, and the little sock where the fuel line goes into the carb. No dice .. now my mechanic friend is saying it’s probably the distributor that’s failing at higher rpms . Is there anything else that could cause this problem? Oh yeah and the tank is pretty new so I don’t think there’s rust or anything clogging it on that end

Thanks

Welcome , if the fuel system is sorted , I would concentrate my efforts on the ignition system . IMO the best thing to get is a fsm for your vehicle . I can't stress enough the importance of making sure everything is clean and lubed . there's no excuse to have a grubby engine or car for that matter . Good luck !

Welcome!!! We have lot of advice here,s ome worthwhile!!!!

Your issue could be fuel, or ignition or ??? IF this car has been sitting for LONG time before you got it, consider pulling the gas tank, checking crap there and if the sock (filter) is still on the line. At that time I disconnect the line at the fuel pump, and blow air from back to front to be sure line is well open.

Ask this question in the correct spot and you will get lots of good advice.

Welcome! Agree with above...check the in tank filter screen and condition of the fuel tank. They are often pretty rough and need some attention after 55 years.

Hey thanks guys sorry haven’t been online in a while but I’ve figured out it’s a fuel problem. I replaced the points with a pertronix ignitor and then I realized that the fuel line is bubbling air into the filter and it’s not filling up the filter enough . Any advice on the best way to find the leak?
