Maybe because back then the focus was on the actual sport and the action taking place. back then there was one, maybe two persons at the event doing the play by play.
Today it seems the focus is on the folks reporting the activity. there are at least three maybe four folks in the booth, a couple of side line reporters, a special halftime crew of reporters, special guest reporters, with all of them adding their own meaningless comments.
