9-Second, Stock-Looking Muscle Cars—Inside The Factory Appearing Stock Tire Class

That's pretty KOOL :steering:
I can see the Safety Safari guys scurrying after a lot of dog dishes and trim rings
Looks like there is a yellow Dustpan in the back row of that photo there.
"They really start to hook up when you see the wear bars." Classic

That would be a fun, yet frustrating class of racing. Chassis setup must dominate garage time. No sense out powering everyone is you can't hook. And driver skill will also be alot more telling. All things being equal? A-bodies would certainly have some advantage. If I had my choice of build concepts? A '68 Hemi Barracuda (B029) clone may be at the top of that list. Power to weight ratio would be tough to match by any other manufacture setup? Now? How to get that little beast to hook on 6.5" tires? Which brings back to "Chassis setup"

that and all the little weight saving secrets... hollowed out stock batter with a tiny one inside, hollowed out seats and heater boxes then the money into the engine and trans has got to be crazy to run those times.. and all that is after spending the 30+k to restore the body and all..lol

And while some people have money to burn on such things, others cry at the expense of roller rockers for the latest aluminum heads.

You can only go as fast as your wallet is thick.

Thanks for sharing, Joe. Those classes have some badass cars.

BO29 cars would not qualify. Neither would Thunderbolts etc...

There are several 340 A-bodies that are top dogs in the stock class . A black Duster and that yellow one are 2 examples.

My favorite racing classes.

Harbit's "Stude Tomato" Lark has to be my favorite- nothing like the unsung underdog going out and kicking some royal a**! Talk about doing it "your way"!

I suppose they have already thought about race specific builds as a disqualifying factor. That certainly takes out some of the classic stocker/Super Stock of yesteryear. But A-bodies would certainly still be on the front runners? They are light. More abundant and the most bang for the buck in the Mopar world? If I was a Chevy guy? I would probably choose a Nova for much the same reasons.

I saw these guys run at Indy a few years ago.
The fastest 2 chevies were 69 Corvettes. Both had 15x8 rallies, and fairly bald (shaved?) Firestone wide O vals. Both cars were L-88 powered and ran in the 9s.
And im telling you, those cars really looked stock!

Vettes are well balanced. But they are heavy, and of course EXPENSIVE. But if money is not the object? Then so be it. Personally? I like a Duster build. Being naturally a little nose heavy they launch well. (Although that's with wider slicks.) It's the 6.5" max tire requirements that will test any design concepts? And what works for traditional drag race index racing? May not under these rules?

I remember Hot Rod magazine did a from showroom to track test in early 70s. Absolutely no modification. Including air filter, tires. And a '69 Nova SS won running a 13 flat with a L78 396. Now of course that's far from scientific. And many were running low 13s. I believe Mopar's best was a '69 Hemi RoadRunner. At 13.20s. I believe both were auto trans. And if I remember right? No practice run. Just line up an go. (Which certainly will hurt 4-speed chances?)

The reason Mopars rule in this event are because many came stock with multiple carbs , 15" wheels , unibodys , great suspension , Holley and Carter carbs and HEMI's . This all helps if tou must keep it stock looking .
I am surprissed we dont see more Max Wedge clones . They were even available with aluminum fron clips .
And were available to the general public.
